Has anyone went in for their third brake light recall with having a camper shell on your bed? I'm currently waiting for a service and they've been going back and forth with me three times now (three separate services) over how they are going to resolve the break light recall with my camper on. The first two times they did not resolve it apparently and did not tell me it was still an issue. At this point the service center has told me either I have to remove the shell so they can get to the light, or they will CHARGE me for them to remove and reinstall the shell ($100-$200). I have explained that the shell has been on the truck since before the recall, and they were supposed to have completed it already. The access window inside is removable, and I have told them that twice. They said if the shell stays on, they would have to get on top of the truck to get to the light. Has anyone dealt with this? And should Toyota pay for the removal and reinstall of my shell, or myself? Thanks

Gotta take the shell off. If they have to do it, it’s not included in their book price for the repair to be done so you have to pay for their labor.

Sounds like you have a shell, not a camper. But yes, you're on the hook for removing it.

They asked me to remove my camper shell as well. I have roof rack and lightings on the rack so I cannot remove my camper therefore, I haven't done this recall yet.

Same experience here. Told shell has to be removed. They then noted I declined the recall.

No water intrusion yet. Looking into purchasing parts myself to do it myself when the weather warms up.

Just use silicone until you can get to it. Takes like 2 min to seal the top and sides.

I got lucky and they called and said they wanted to do mine during a routine service. Picked up a few hours later and they had even reapplied silicon and new seals for me from sliding it back and forth. He told me they only needed to really move it maybe 6 inches max. However, I’m sure it’s a matter of which dealer as well.

Perfectly acceptable to charge labor if you don’t make it accessible or just don’t get it done… and accept responsibility if/when it leaks. Personally I would remove it myself to prevent damage

Yep had to remove my shell. Was a pain as I had to disconnect a lot of wiring. Dealer might be able to do it with shell on but it makes access more difficult, and of course if they put the tiniest scratch on your shell in that area can you imagine the shit show on this site with a title starting as “Dealer scratched my shell”.

That’s an example of a good dealer, doing the right thing.

Yep, have to remove it. I had my bed rack/rtt on when I was in. They told me the same thing. Have to pull it so they can get to the work.

Now if the dealer would of installed it as an option then they would have to remove it at their expense. Caps and camper are not an option though Toyota. Just about everything else is. just saying

I might try to ask the dealer if they can just hand the parts out to do it myself sometime, or I am just going to do it with silicone. I live in the desert and nobody was going to see the light anyway.
