We have kids and they ride in my Tacoma perfectly happy. The only problem is we now have four. We test drove a 4runner and felt the back seat had no more space than the Tacoma. Plus the Tacoma has way more space for bikes, kayaks, etc than the 4runnner. We actually bought a Honda pilot to fit the whole family. It's odd that it is roomier than the 4runner or a land cruiser. We looked at those too.

Sequoia, Expedition, Tahoe, or a Suburban. Suburban or Expediton Max would probably be your best option.

Wood grain cladding should make a come back.

Oh man… 2 kids in the taco already sounds rough. Can’t imagine 3. But yes 4Runner will definitely have more space in the rear.

Get a sequoia if you feel the need to stick with a toyota.
Otherwise, get a bigger suv like said above

Seriously. If I had even 2 kids I’d be driving one. They’re so damn useful.

Not sure how you came to think the 4runner back seat had no more space than the Tacoma (maybe you’re talking about other generations?), but my 5th gen 4runner has at least 6” more leg room in the back than my 3rd gen Tacoma (with both the driver’s seats all the way back).

It’s a really big difference OP. But with 3 kids, you’re gonna want the 3rd row seat in the 4Runner if you go that route. Nice thing is, the whole seat collapses easily into the floor in a few seconds.

We don't call them mini-vans anymore. They are officially known as Crossover's. Sounds way cooler.

PS: anyone remember the commercial for the "Montana" mini-van? They showed a bunch of guys robbing a train with the mini-van and the tag line was "maybe it ain't a mini-van?". You can put fucking flames down the side; but it is still a mini-van! :)

I hate to say it…minivan time. I did 10 hard years in one. Worth every minute with my kids.

What is so special about a mini-van opposed to like a Tahoe or Suburban?

Chrysler dodge minivans the seats fold flat and you can fit a full sheet of plywood in the back. They ride smoother and get better fuel economy. The Toyota Sienna now has a hybrid engine that gets a claimed 36mpg combined.

My family has both a 2016 4Runner and a 2022 Tacoma DC. For 3 kids, the 4Runner is a much better option.

It also depends on the age of the kids and if they are in rear facing, forward facing, or booster seat. If they are all in car seats, then get something bigger, but if the older two are in booster seats or close to it you might be ok for a while. Car seats are big and bulky, while kids are mostly small. My 10yr old takes up about the same car space as he did at 3 because of the size of rear or forward facing car seats.

4Runner. A great SUV which few have ever regretted buying, and if you did, selling for near or better than you paid is a given. Here's one I had and drove for 4 years, and traded in on a Tacoma for 1000 less than I pad for it. Kinda wish I still had it to complement the Tacoma.4Runner.jpg

go tundra. The 4Runner even with a slightly bigger back seat area, that rear facing car seat is going to suck for the next few years and suck up a ton of room. I have a rear and a forward facing in my tundra, and there is so much space still.
