Anyone ever watch the segment 60 minutes did on Audi? They actually broadcast the crazy stories then showed cars being tested. They actually took a car from park the drive, with the accelerator pressed to the floor and the brakes firmly applied. The vehicle did not have the power to overcome the brakes.

Sure, with all the drive by wire today shit could happen but with her foot on the brake? Are not brakes still analog on a Taco? Even at full power the brakes should have the ability to keep the truck from moving...if it's anything like an Audis brakes (AND it was in park).

So brakes failed, brake override failed & gear selector failed. Possible, yes. Probable, no.

ON EDIT: Did the story say Toyota was going to take up to 30 days to send a rep? If that's correct, I think it's a bad call.

My new 2017 (1300 miles) surges as it is warming up. All other cars and trucks that I have experienced -come up to a higher RPM during warm up and then settle down after the warm up time-- not this one -- it can't seem to decide where it wants to set the RPM's Sounds like no big deal -- but this is the first and only vehicle that I have had this experience with in my 69 years of life. I told the dealer about this and they kinda blew it off?? Next week I am going in AGAIN and going to be more firm in my complaint of this problem. Does not sound bad, but if the truck was on slick pavement (ice or snow), and my wife or someone else (who was not used to it) was driving it, they could loose control of it and put it through our garage door or WORSE!!
This is really my only complaint so far after 2 months!

I was a service tech at an Audi store in teh late 80's when the "unintended acceration" was the talk of the nation. What Audi "discovered" was that the people who had experienced "unintended acceleration" were first time Audi owners. What difference does that make you ask, apparently quite a bit... new to the car, still figuring out where everything is, etc. etc. The 60 Minutes "hit piece" on Audis problem was proven to be a hoax, the guy rigged the car. At the same time there was a recall on the IAC valve. It would hang and the motor would run around 1800 rpm. People were freaking out. It is 30 years later and everyone still knows about Audis "problem". As soon as I read about her in her new 2017 I knew what the problem was... a new car to her. Human nature being what it is people want to blame some "thing" as opposed to themselves.

    Is it bro?

First article I found shows average age 60 years old for Toyota accelerator issues dating back to 92.

    https://www.overlawyered.com/2010/03/toyota-acceleration-why-im-skeptical/

Don't care to search further. Every news article you see is what I put in my post, Woman, older or hipster, all people with limited mechanical abilities, with slow reaction time.

Some of the guys on this forum have been installing remote starters...
Do we have to be concerned that their Tacomas could drive off by themselves after being remotely started in "park"?
Or would that be impossible since you have to also step on the brake to make the car lunge forward?

She is driving a damaged vehicle. Wanna guess if she had it checked by a qualified mechanic before doing so?

So, for this to happen the first thing to fail would be the tranny, to shift from drive to park don't you go to n then to reverse then p. If the truck did surge wouldn't it go in reverse? And as others have said isn't there a brake and gas override? And last but not least the brakes should be strong enough to hold or atleast burn the tires, but I guess that one didn't have brakes it had breaks.

I had a '98 zr2 blazer that the throttle would stick wide open on, I'd just stomp the pedal to unstick it. And I remember when I first got my '11 I was sitting at a light with the Ac on when the compressor kicked on the first time I didn't have my foot pressed on the brake pedal far enough and was about 3" from rear ending a Ranger.

when the recall happened with prius a few years ago I remember reading an article that most of them were old people and they were accelerating thinking it was the brake.

even if the engine surged and accelerated for no reason, if she had her foot on the brake it likely would've stopped it.
