Like that is a bad thing. The 60s, 70s, 80s trucks I grew up in were down right barbaric compared the Tacoma, damn glad it drives more like a car than a truck.

My 1980 C20 3/4 ton square body would change lanes over paint lines because the rear springs were so stiff. It took an fully dressed engine tied down in the back to make the ride mildly comfortable. The 4 on the floor with crawler low 1st shift travel was about 2 feet between gears, from dash in first and 3rd to well into the bench in 2nd and 4th, and then reverse was somewhere between the passengers legs.

The Tacoma rides like a Cadillac compared to that!

    Lol!

Our 3/4-1 Ton 70s Fords were about same. Those old Borg-Warner T18/19s were awful, damn near would crush your knuckles into the dash if you jammed it hard enough into 3rd.

Big enough bumps the bench would launch your skull into the headliner.

The ‘68 F600 was even worse, now those things rode like trucks, the ride was not too far removed from a horse drawn wagon.

105,000 miles on my 2017 TRD OR DCSB Auto.
Basic lazy maintenance: 5K oil changes first 30K; diff oils replaced at 30K; 10K oil changes after that.
Aiming for 300K miles, but it is going from daily driver to expo vehicle this year.

Over 76k miles and no issues.
    So far so good.
    Time will really tell.
If this truck lasts to 150-200k with minimal issues, I will count that as pretty good.

I’d agree with you. Sweers half assed the auto transmission tune. 2GR is a solid, versatile motor and better than any other offerings from other auto mfr’s.

Like I said, I’m a fan of the 1GR and I do think they should have dropped the 4Runner motor into the 3rd Gen. That said, I’d be willing to bet the 2GR has many, many more miles of R&D and was chosen for the Taco due to its proven reliability, especially since it was initially designed for Lexus power trains.

I think people just read the Tacomaworld complaints and blow the negatives out of proportion.

The 4runner 1GR is still a 20+ year old motor design. People would be bitching about that if they used it in the 3rd gen.

A third option would have been better.

Yea, you’re not wrong. Sounds like everyone will be chomping at the bit to bitch about the 4 banger turbo hybrid coming up in the 4th Gen.

Rumor has it the next Tacoma will be getting the 2.4L power plant from the Lexus NX350. Take a test drive at your nearest Lexus dealership, it’s an awesome motor.

I’m due for an upgrade. I loathe to sell my truck but the damn kids are too big for an access cab now.

    2.4 turbo sounds pretty good!

Toyota is doing well with their self removing wheel technology.

Those things were awful. Almost bought a ‘76 F250 as a hobby vehicle, took it for a test drive. Yep, no thanks…forgot how bad those things were. Sometimes nostalgia is best left in the past.

Went and sat in the new Tundra recently, dang it was nice! Must resist! Must resist!

Good to understand the history behind my minivan motor. Good read thx.

It seems to fall in line with what else I ve heard and read else where. Car nut YouTube for example (Master Tech). Toyota will work out the kinks on a design and keep pushing it forward to build that "reliability" factor up.
Some hate it, while others love it. Just depends if you like that approach.
What do they call it ? "Kaizen"?

I'll also add that anyone in the engineering world everyone knows "typical designs" are forefront for all the obvious reasons and rarely are all new designs used for the same reason. only trial and error gives you the real answers. I appreciate Toyotas blended approach to this process.
