Didn’t some of the early 4.0s have some head gasket issues?

    Short answer, yes.

Long answer: yes, there's still no turbo to blow out at 150k.

I will say as much as I love my 05 I did have to do both head gaskets at 110k due to failures.

I don't know, but I have ~72k and have been driving daily in NH since December 2016 on my 2017 Sport. I have towed, off-road, and hauled many a things - been a great truck so far and expect many many more years and miles :proposetoast:.

Yea but the issues don't really show up until 200k. Still cheaper than a timing cover reseal on a 3.5 which seem to happen frequently under 100k.

Whoa whoa whoa! Leave us 1st gen owners out of this odd sibling rivalry. Our trucks have definitely earned their keep and continue to do so. Plus we’re busy completely tearing our shit apart.

Don’t forget the SAIS issue too. Sure, the unimod filter is cheap insurance but it’s still an issue

Peanuts compared to $4500 timing cover reseals and head failures.

About to hit 76k miles on my 2017. Just did the serpentine belt and PCV valve. Looked over the engine bay and besides some light surface rust on some hose clamps the thing is tip top. Oil changes every 5k. Fluids at manual intervals. I love my truck, yeah it rattles a little bit and has some vibes here and there (probably from the lift and tires) but its been waaay more reliable than my 2 jeeps lol. I plan to run this thing into the ground.

Because they refuse to die! Hell, finally bought a new one after 20 years because I got bored of driving it. Still have the 1st Gen…and it keeps on running! They aren’t without their flaws, have to do the 5VZ timing belt and water pumps every 90K. That and most everything around the engine eventually fails.

Not even sure why thread like these pop up, since majority of people don’t hang on to their vehicles for the long haul, very few keep it for 20 years/500K, most get bored and trade in early.

I can’t get over how quiet it is. Guess it is all about perspective.

Don’t think the problem is gearing, needs a diesel option. The 3.5 is a revver, even with a manual trans, 8 speed auto, low diff gears, whatever, still have to ring its neck to get peak torque. Diesel moves peak torque lower in the rpm range, and getting decent fuel consumption. Of course some guys will still bitch, since small diesels aren’t terribly fast, and would make the Tacoma more truck like. Most Tacoma owners don’t want a “real” truck, otherwise they would of bought something else. The rest of the world who actually use these mid sizes as trucks unlike play things here, get diesels. That will never happen, guess the turbo 4 gasser hybrid in the new ‘24 will be close enough.

Same here for my 2020. Its hauled, and towed everything from snowmobiles up north to concrete, and mixers down south, plus lawn tractors, boats, and garbage east, and west. Gets me around on errands everyday. I hope to have it as long as my 01 tundra.

Yeah, but you all benefit from survivor bias at this point. There was no Internet when 1st gens had less than a 100k miles on them, and if an engine blows but no one complains about it on a forum, did the engine really blow?

Its common knowledge that you got rid of your Tacoma after the engine grenaded due to fram filter use.

I was actually just talking to someone who had a 99 V6 that threw a rod when it had under 100k miles back when they bought it 10 years ago.

It might’ve been due to shoddy maintenance; but still, it’s not like every 1st gen automatically made it to 300k miles with no issues.

Also, the early 3.4s had some head gasket issues in the first several years of production. There was even a special service campaign about it.
