so i am scheduled to bring my dad's 98 tacoma in to the dealer tomorrow for the frame recall. we first took it to my local inspection guy who found 2 soft spots in the frame. he was "tapping" it with a chipping hammer like you would use for welding and the hammer went through the frame in 2 places. first toyota dealer said the frame was pierced with a sharp object and not weak. this left me with a truck that i could not get inspected and therefore could not drive. so i contacted another shop who said to bring it right in and they would take a look. they agreed that the frame was pierced with a sharp object, but found another spot that was weak but did not break when they hit it. their conclusion was we can not condemn the truck or pass it at this time give us a couple weeks to work with toyota and see what we can do, that was in april. i finally got back in touch with them last week and found out the guy i was waiting to hear from got done there about a week after i met with him. the new guy i have been talking with seems very eager to look at the truck and get it bought back so here's hoping that the third time is a charm.

You should weld a plate on the frame. It's an automatic failure.

it has a small hole where they said it was weak so it should fail this time. i thought if you welded or altered the frame in any way it would be dismissed.

when i took the truck to get inspected, the mechanic used a small "chipping" hammer like you would use to remove slag from a weld. on the passenger side near the forward rear spring perch the hammer poked a hole in the frame. then he found two other soft spots and refused to put a sticker on the truck. toyota uses a ball pean hammer and requires that the frame tears when hit, there was no drilling involved. as for the price i am not sure at this time i think its around 10k.

Ha my dealership didn't even look at mine! I brought it in and said I wanted it to fail. They came got me 30 mins later and said it failed, but It didn't actually move from the spot I left it!

    Good luck!

you must have brought it back when the program first started. berlin city told us that toyota has to inspect the frame before they pay. apparently when the program first started they were flunking trucks that were not that bad and paying out, then getting reimbursed from toyota. if toyota didnt agree that the truck was bad the dealership had to eat the cost of the buyback for that truck. this was how berlin city explained it to me.

RUST: sometimes known as car cancer; seen most in vehicles in northern new england. just one of the added joys of living here with our 8 months of winter,3 months of mud season, 1 month of nice weather if we are lucky.
