Just because someone makes money off of it doesn't make the claim any less true. Auto glass is absolutely crucial to the structural integrity of a vehicle. Thats not to say a single rock chip is going to play enough of a role in a rollover accident to make a difference, but a lengthy crack across the windshield, that's a little more debatable.

The problem its not definitive, what crack is dangerous, what isnt.

But how structural is it? Does it help with the initial roll because it breaks instantly.

My issue is if you google it, its just auto glass companies and injury lawyers saying its critical, but theres no independent validation of this claim.

I get that you dont want a badly damaged windshild because it will shatter and cause more harm, but a standard crack is debatable and lacks proper proof in my opinion.

My problem is the scare tactics and people like my mom freak out over small chips/cracks for no reason.

In every state I know of a cracked wind shield is illegal and if seen by law enforcement will be cited. Bottom line if you have a cracked windshield get it replaced. Don’t want to get off in the weeds re window integrity, just replace it. Why the OP has had 3 cracked windshields in less than a year no one knows. Of note the op hasn’t been back to TW since he posted last night. May be wrong but I kind of doubt we’ll hear from him again. We’ll see.

Three replacements in a year sounds absurd to me under any semblance of normal circumstances.

Windsheilds have been saftey rated since at least the 50's.
That means 2 layers of glass with a stretchy plastic inbetween. Front windsheilds do not shatter into flying hazardous projectiles. They are designed to incorporate the sandwiched plastic and fracture in a less damaging self contained piece.

Sounds like op needs to learn how to install his own glass would be alot cheaper that way. Why pay someone when you can do it yourself.

Thankfully our tacomas are about the easiest windshields to do.

Mine cracked 3x in 3 weeks from rocks being thrown at me this year when traveling around the state. Just get it replaced and be done with it op. Local in town shop did it for me, and insurance covered it

This seems strange that happening that many times. Maybe got cheap. I know my 14 challenger is basically installed on glue and have heard reports that you can actually push from the inside and dislodge. I have had a couple of stars but no cracks. I believe that most insurance now cover the star repair.

Yea for sure, I mean if they are badly damaged they will shatter into pieces (looking at major car accident aftermath) so I'm thinking the warnings are for badly damaged windshields because cracked ones will still hold together.

lol at your message. I was thinking, how the hell a tint help stop a rock? It won’t. But there are companies out there who make clear film to apply outside of the windshield to help stop small rock that cause chips. How well will it perform? I don’t know. Maybe it will help stop a small enough rock to prevent a chip that will lead to bigger crack later?

A friend of mine had a 3m clear film applied to his hood, side, front bumper, and headlight for 5 years. Not a single paint chip on his hood, bumper, or side. His headlight is a lot cleaner comparing to all the vehicle I own. All of my vehicles have paint chips on the hood and bumpers.

I had 2 windshield replacement and that was just an idea base on what I’ve seen. In my original post I did said something is better than nothing.

Actually have you ever seen a windsheild when (an item lets say) has gone thru? The glass is captured in the streched out intrigal plastic part of the saftey glass. Kinda looks like a bulls eye. The little pieces arent shards of dagger like shanks that some seem to imagine. I've recently had a golf ball size hole put thru my windsheild from an oncoming rock. It just looked like a cat walking aways butt hole, only larger. The rest of the windsheild was fine. Like you poked a hole that was left crusty/crumbly around the edges. So yeah a layer of kevlar probably wouldnt even benifit.

Lmao. It's actually not that bad. Granted I've been doing autoglass since 2006. So it's a walk in the park for me. But toyotas in general are pretty easy to do glass on. Besides the fj cuz that design was garbage.

I live along the I-17 corridor. The road constructin and the TSMC Plant between Happy Valley and Care Free Highway have put a TON of Debris on the road. Especially all of the trades that are boondocking in the desert out there. I have been steadily filing complaints with ADOT and getting no-where. But I un a dash cam so one day I sent them the video of what the road looked like and told them this was my last letter / complaint on the topic. Next time I lose a windshield, I'm starting a youtube channel called "ADOT loves trash on I-17." Well that little E-Mail got forwarded to the top. A senior leader at ADOT personally called me and apologized and told me they were getting on it. I've probably had 10 letters from various segments and departments of ADOT tell me they are working on it. True to their word - there is still trash all over I-17 but I see it getting cleaned up on the regular now.
