started the memorial weekend off right, knees are going to be sore from mt defiance this afternoon. Fog kind of spoiled the view of the three washington peaks and hood.

I need to get out there. Was the Steens MT road up to the top open? I feel like it would be snow socked until August... I've read its the highest peak you can drive to in the state @ 10,000ft plus. As high as a couple of the passes in So Cal like Yosemite's East gate.

For sure not open yet. Snow is still waist deep above 7500' in this part of the state, but these warm temps this week will burn it off quickly on the south slopes.

We didn't even try going up, stayed on the lake. From our vantage point it looked pretty socked in. One person referred to it as Patagonia. Last August when I was up there, there was a blizzard and I got snowed in for a day. Wasn't prepared for that. It was August. Who prepares for snow in August in this hemisphere?

It's a different world up there. This was two weeks ago at 6500' on Baldy Mt. We didn't make it anywhere near the summit. South slope was fine (although a tad muddy), north slope was still wintertime.

There were like four or five guys with them on the last run. I personally use a walmart instant tent with cots. It keeps me dry, and sets up faster than any RTT, and if it gets torn up I can get another one for under $100. By my calculations I can buy 18 walmart tents and still come out ahead. They do look cool and if I was scared of snakes I'd have one. :duel:
