Saw 60 head of elk or so in one herd, and 20 deer in three groups. Also saw fresh bear sign, which means the den is nearby or they are out of hibernation already. Also possible wolf scat right in front the FJ80 in the pic, but the tracks were melted out and it could have been a dog (had fur in it, too big for 'yote). There is a breeding pair off the ten road up there somewhere. All around 4-5000' elevation.

Cool, that's a nice area, but there are way too many hunters in there during bow season.

Yes, there are too many road hunters during bow season, but almost none of them get out and walk very far.

Are you able to get in far enough to where you can call without other hunters bugling back? I hunted up there for a couple days two years ago, but just when I thought I was in far enough, I ran into another road. I saw some cows, though.

Bugle. Hah. It's been so hot during archery season the last few years they aren't talkin' until the last weekend, and yes, there are some places that give the unit it's name. (desolation)

Hint: Park near the confluence of Granite creek and Indian creek. Head West/Northwest to Backout creek. Elk city is nearby.

Dude there is so much to see out here...how much time do you have? If you are on a tight schedule take 395 south out of Pendleton to Ukiah, then take the FS-52 road (all paved now) through Granite to Sumpter and squirt out to Baker City and link up with the freeway again. Wouldn't be much out of your way, but epic Alpine vistas abound.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
I moved away. I miss certain things, but I'm happier in Washington.

Ill have to take a look at your suggestions in google maps and plan out the trip. Ive got about a little over a day to kill in tree time from the time i leave pdx to when i enter montana. So give or take i can spare half a day or so to mess around in eastern oregon. was going to take the mini cooper for the trip to save on gas. You think a cooper is capable in those areas?

It's all paved, but unsure of the snow situation up there. I'm pretty sure it's plowed, but I would sure hate to send you up there in a mini if it's not. (The snow is like concrete right now, but 4x4 would help) If you like to haul the mail you could head south on Hwy 97 at Biggs Junction, take highway 206 through Cottonwood State Park, then to Condon, Heppner, and through to Pilot Rock. No cops, no traffic. That is one of my triple digit motorcycle routes. Watch out for elk and deer. Then you could go to Pendleton, and north to Walla Walla and on to Lewiston and take Lolo pass into Montana. That's a neat drive. A million ways to go, but if I was unleashed in a mini that is the route I'd take. The tires might be bald by the time you get to Montana though!

Edit: It was still a little icy in the woods above 5000' today. I don't think much snow will melt off as the night temps will all be well below freezing this week, at least on this side of the state.
