This is what a 2TR clutch looks like after 20k miles of street use.

So I got tired of my slipping clutch. It started at 16k miles. It was pretty easy to tell it was an issue with the pressure plate because I didn't completely lose forward movement. It would only slip if I punched it in 3rd. Eventually it slipped in every gear while accelerating, but I was still able to limp it along. I put 33s and 4.88s in at 8k miles so it only took an additional 8k to start having issues. The only other mod to the the truck is a Doug thorley header.

The flywheel looks brand new. Factory machining is still present. I really only drive my truck back and forth to work, and to the gun range on the weekend. So I don't see why I couldn't have had this replaced under warranty. Rather that fight over it and end up in the same situation in another 10k miles I ordered an LCE clutch. I hate the feel of the stock clutch anyway.

Notice the heat spots on the pressure plate.... And how ridiculously small it is. It looks like it came out of a barbie jeep.

Your problem is you have a coke can lodged between the clutch and the flywheel.

but it looks like you still have plenty of friction material. . . . just heat glazing that makes it slip or lack of pressure from the plate?

Lack of pressure causes the glaze. This is a luk clutch which is specifically known to be a weak pressure plate. The trucks that came with aisin plates didn't have this problem.

Do you ride the clutch a lot? No offense, but driving skill (or lack thereof) is typically to blame for premature clutch failure.

Typically, your comment would be right on the money. But these LUK clutches used in the 2TR 4cylinders are known to slip badly, as OPs has. His is not the first, nor the last by any means. Its a "known issue", and thats an understatement.

BlackSeven, I agree, that should be covered by warranty. I would do the same in your shoes though, sometimes its easier to upgrade something yourself than fight over it. I'm sure you'll like the truck better for it.

Thats a luk clutch and pressure plate, they suck my 2010 had the same issue and same clutch, i replaced it with the asian counterpart, much better. Then traded it in 3 months later haha.

Not yet. It won't be here until sometime next week. I pulled everything apart so I could see if the flywheel needed to be resurfaced so I could have that done and not waste any time when the clutch is here.

Some came with the aisin clutch, and they are better, but still weak for anything over stock tires.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I must have an asian clutch because I have never had any problems towing. Will definitely do this when mine does go though.
