Yea, it pisses folks off in the 55 mphzone but I keep to the right and laylow.

Just be careful - that’s how Harry Chapin (song “Taxi”) died! He was struck from behind by a semi on the Long Island Expressway and was reportedly driving much slower than the flow of traffic.

    Safety is no accident.

i can get 27 mpg in an auto if i don't have anyone tailgating me. usually going about 40-45 mph along the back-roads here. it does take some effort to make it happen though.

It would be nice, but if you look at that thread, it doesn't just bolt up, sadly.

No, that is unfortunate. The reverse alone would be nice but the 1st gear ratio is also nice for hill starts and crawling.

Agreed. I think all the ratios in that transmission are pretty lusty. WTF, Toyota!?

5th and 6th seem fairly close, usually just skip 5th and go from 4th straight to 6th.

I usually skip 4th and go 3 to 5. I get great mpg on back roads going 45-55mph, getting on the highway in New England means going at least 70+ so highway mpg goes right down the toilet and i'm out of gears by the time i'm trying to merge in.

Bilstein 6112's 5th clip 1/4" spacer driver's side. Icon tubular UCA's with Delta joint, wheelers superbumps, ECGS bushing. Allpro standard leaf packs, 5160's, U bolt flip kit with wheelers super bump's, extended stainless steel brake lines, carrier bearing drop. Icon rebounds 17" with Nitto terra grappler G2's 285/70/17's.
The answer to your bet is pretty easy to prove, the advertised highway MPG's of the manual are 1MPG lower than the auto. The only difference at highway speeds is final drive ratio. The torque converter is locked on the auto at that speed so it's a direct drive just like the manual.

The AT's TC can lock and unlock in any gear, and often unlocks at highway speeds.

I'm sure someone like @gearcruncher will correct me if I'm wrong but watching my gear, rpm, and trans fluid temp out of the converter I've seen it in all gears - it's especially noticeable when towing and I'm staring at the temps constantly.

There are three TC phases: Unlocked, Slip Locked / Flex Locked / Partial Locked, and Locked. Locked is available in 3rd (I believe) through 6th. Unlocked and Partial Locked can happen in all gears. Any time that you are coasting and not on the throttle, the AT is in Partial Lock.

The TC Locking and Unlocking can sometimes feel like a shift. The best thing that you can do to learn is either get an app like OBD Fusion and monitor the shift and TC status or figure out the RPMs for your setup. That will at least give you a good estimate of the revs that you should see when locked.

Here's a good site, along with the gear ratios linked in my signature:

No, not even remotely that easy. The advertised numbers are based upon the non-realistic EPA testing; the real world is very different. As for torque converter lockups operating just like a manual, nope again; automatic transmissions have a whole lot more going on with pumping fluids for cooling and such than a manual gearbox.
