So I'm looking to purchase a roof top tent and also looking and researching for ways to mount the roof top tent. I currently have a Snugtop Xtra Vision shell on my DCSB. I would love to mount a rack on the shell and put the tent on the shell but I contacted Snugtop and they claimed that my model shell could only hold 200lbs and they only offer shells that can hold up to 500lbs. With the tent, myself, my wife, and our son we'd be damn close to 500lbs yet I see people with larger tents that can hold more gear and people without issue. Is it just that Snugtop isn't rated very high or do people really cut it close to the max load for the shell with the RTT? Any information would be helpful...

From what I've heard, they rate them very low. Plenty of people run them. I ran mine on a reinforced shell with no problem. My Girlfriend + Me + Tent = about 450. Never felt a flex.

I believe @zscott is knowledgable on this subject. Also check the RTT owners thread.

Do you know what the weight limit was listed by the manufacturer?

The weight limits manufacturers post are dynamic weights, i.e. when the truck is at highway speeds or cornering. The tent itself is only about 150 pounds so mounting the rtt should be fine. The weight limit when stopped is much higher than the rated limit. Just remember to include the weight of the rack when considering options.

Does anyone have experience with heating a RTT in some way? We bought our Tacoma to be our exploring vehicle and it won't be completed and ready for use for another couple of weeks and my wife and I are sad we missed the good weather. Here in Utah the Unitas and other ranges get really cold at night. We have a 1 year old and really want to get out this winter but worry about the baby. We'd be fine but don't have confidence we could keep the baby warm. Are there any options?

On my ARE Z series, I couldn't find shit online about weight limits because I was curious about the same thing. Emailed them and they said standing still it can hold up to 750, but 125 in motion. Thought I'd post this for any future readers.

Part of the reason I opted for the Leer 100RCC is the 450 pound dynamic weight limit. Not that 125 or 150 is bad, but that is really close to how much an RTT weighs by itself. Tepui tents, per their FAQ page, come in between 100 and 220 pound, depending on model. Most caps will hold an RTT just fine, it's when your bouncing around a trail that you may get into trouble.
