    Ok that's what I figured - I think true 70 MPH is about 1600 RPM for 35" tires on a stock 3.73 final with an auto.

    actually it was close - but I was not doing 70 MPH my bad - its closer to 1900RPM

    not at the MPH I was using - like i said my bad, i used 60 not 70 - read above where i stated my error...

    either way, i was getting over 18mpg highway armored, stock gears, and on 35" bfg ats. dropped a little when i went to a heavier rim and heavier mickey thompson baja claw.

    i'm still runnig stock gears, but dropped back to 33s for trail and street.

    FJ is ~120lbs heavier than a second gen double cab 4x4 before armor and I have plenty of armor. I was getting around 14.5MPG highway and about 12MPG city before regearing. I was also struggling up steep grades where even to maintain speed it had to not only drop out of OD but one gear lower. Was it completely horrible - no. Were the gears absolutely necessary - no. Did they make a drastic difference - yes. I now get around 15mpg on the highway and about 14.5mpg City. So it definitely made a difference. Now when i go up steep grades it drops out of OD, but then I am even able to manage moderate acceleration without dropping another gear.

    On another note:

    The guy who did my gears is extremely plugged into that community and did some research on the nitro gears commonly available on the web for the second gens and FJ. He knows the company that imports them and resells them here. He said they are imported from India and not a very good gear set. He went with Sierra Gear with mine which did require a resplined yoke for the FJ.

    i dropped back back to 33s, but it has nothing to do w/ the gearing. i was happy w/ the 35 on stocks. 35s were taking too much of a toll on the 3" lift w/o gutting the entire truck to fully articulate.
