The death knell of the manual transmission is the self driving car/cruise control...They are not compatible with MT. Wife has a crosstrek and it has the Eye Site...She wanted a MT but it's only available in automatic in any of the upper trim levels. Now it does have paddle shifters behind the wheel which I use for engine breaking and quick acceleration...she has no idea what's going on when I paddle shift...
As computer aided driving spreads manual transmissions disappear...

No thanks. I don't even use regular cruise control.

And for those who say that modern automatic transmissions shift smoother and faster than a person could (not to mention have more gears available), that's all true. However, to that I would say that I'm sure there is a machine that could make love to my wife better than I do it (if there isn't, there will be soon), but I don't care, I STILL WANT TO DO IT!

I don't think you have anything to worry about if that machine uses an automatic transmission. Fast and smooth usually aren't good things.

I can not say anymore than what's already been said about our dying art form and the love of a manual transmission. I taught all three sons how to drive a stick when they turned 13. Years later, oldest son trades in his Tacoma for a Mercedes, swearing he just looooves an automatic. A couple of years later, he dumps the Mercedes and gets another stick-shift Tacoma ! I will die with a shifter knob in hand thank you very much.

My fondest memories as a kid are sitting on the floor between the seats shifting gears in my dad's van with a 3-speed. I think I started when I was about 3 yrs old. My kids will learn to drive a manual, it's just a shame that we now live in a world where everyone is the safety patrol. I'd love for them to be sitting up front shifting right now, but I'll probably have to wait until they are much older.

I initially wanted the MT for the fun factor, but then I discovered they don't make a dbl cab long bed with a MT. If they made my OR (DCLB) truck with a manual, and even better a manual transfer case, I'd be driving one. The AT in my 19 isn't too bad. It does like to hang out in that really low rpm simulated Atkinson cycle when just cruising w/out extra power mode on.

I ride both. The ones I don’t get are the sideXside people. Every time I drive one of those I get bored.

I don't really think of it as a typical truck either lol, so in my mind it only kind of counts

My 2nd gen was manual..loved it mostly.I hated it on my commute to work in traffic but otherwise really enjoyed the driver engagement and loved using gearing/engine for braking on ice and packed snow. My 3rd gen is auto mainly due to health challenges with my back and neck, clutching isn't easy. Miss it a lot but not in rush hour traffic for an hour each way!

It's honestly just personal preference. The advantages and disadvantages of each are debated to death and will continue to be.

most impressive, a post about a manual transmission that makes sense.

I have spent a lot of drive time in a gen3 MT and I own a gen 3 auto. Off road , on road.

the only advantage for the MT I noticed was in low range, 1st gear , the MT was more “controlled” Down steep descents (maybe the 4.33 diff gears?).

Other than that the advantages are all placebo now days.

I've had manual transmissions in all my toyota 4x4 pickups before 86 when i got my first auto....never went back. I look at it this way the auto is better for towing and last longer, plus better in busy city traffic. Most of all who wants to have a manual in this day when an auto is available.
