I literally had the same thing happen about 3 months ago. It was driving me nuts...thought it was the hardware on the rear bumper (steel replacement) that had come loose. When I was under the truck with the impact I accidentally bumped the spare and to my surprise it was just dangling there, bouncing around and making all kinds of noise. Hopefully my rear tire carrier comes in soon and I never have to crawl under there to mess with the spare again haha.

I thought I would keep this observation to myself... strange tacoma noises drove me bonkers for several months... sounded like somebody knocking on the passenger door when going over bumps or thru potholes... it did'nt help because the girlfriend has a habit of opening this door before the truck is fully stopped... she managed to wedge the door against a garage wall stud... i figured the passenger door was permanently tweak... well what it turned out to be was sunglasses rattling in the overhead storage... my sense of direction is apparently off... issue solved... the old ford obs is another case... it talks to me all the time going down the road... lol...
