So what if you run over my kid and kill him in your impaired state, the argument can go on forever.

If you want to save that many just make alcohol illegal, oh wait we tried that it didn't work.

    Remove the wheel from civilization.

Outlaw the sale of alcohol to anyone who holds a driver's license.

Not that those things would prevent drunk driving.

If technology solved problems there wouldn't be any problems.

Here is what I know, I don't drink and I never will, there is no reason for this to be on my car, there is no reason I should be forced to buy a car with it installed on it. Criminals will continue to break the law and drunks who are stupid enough to drive will continue to do so. I personally believe long mandatory prison sentences for people with dui's are a good solution, as it punishes criminals and not law abiding citizens such as myself. It also has the added benefit of guarantying a drunk driver stays off the street while hes in jail.

Devils advocate here, but how does having it installed on your car harm you? You dont drive drunk, you have nothing to worry about I would think. I heard the same argument made when seat belts became mandatory, I should not be forced to wear them, you will burn to death in your car in a wreck, then there was the argument that air bags will blow up in your face driving down the road.

There is no answer, so we just live with it.

2017+ SuperDuty and 2011(?)+ ford's have this, an icon pops up on the cluster with a coffee icon and tells you it's time for a break if it detects you driving erratically

Except everyone needs a seat belt in a crash, I however will never need drunk driving tech in my car. I can't get in my car ever day and say "I won't get in an accident today" because there are other drivers on the road who are less attentive. I can however say that I will never drink and therefor do not need this on my car. There is no reason I should pay for it and be forced to use it. Also people do die because they can't unlatch a seat belt, the catch 22 is of course they would have died when the crash happened without it. I also think seat belts should only be required for a minor, if you want to drive without one it should be your call and its your own fault if you get plastered on the pavement because you didn't were it.

What if you have dry mouth and can't produce any saliva. Your vehicle forces you to pull onto the shoulder, because you can't prove you haven't consumed alcohol in the past hour. Now a semi truck slams into your parked car, because it couldn't stop because it isn't equppied with ABS, and the road is wet from from the morning fog. Had you not been sitting in the shoulder, for no good reason. You would still be alive.

That sounds like a horrible way to live your entire life. I'm thankful for those characters throughout history who sought out answers and didn't just bow down at every opportunity.

It does sound like a horrible way to live your entire life. But it appears to be the path we have chosen.

At this point I’m 100% against any anti drunk driving technology. Too many things to go wrong. Maybe in the future if the technology has been perfected to 99.99999% accuracy and with 0 problems. If you want the minimize or significantly reduce the number of drunk drivers, make the penalties for it way way more severe than they are now. Make the penalties a major deterrent. For example first non injury, non accident DUI , 30 days in jail, $5,000 to $10,000 fine, license suspension 1 year. 2nd DUI double or triple the penalties of the first. 3rd DUI major prison time, license revoked for life. Any DUI with injuries or death , throw away the key and never be allowed to drive again. Make all drivers aware of the penalties. They have a choice and know what will happen if caught. No surprises.

I was close friends with a young couple , had been married for a month, had their whole life ahead of the. One evening they were heading to Yosemite National park for a few days camping. A drunk blew through a red light at 70 mph, t boned their car, killing both of them instantly. I had been at their wedding a month earlier. I will never forget that.

I like my red wine and occasional drink of bourbon but I will never get behind the wheel of a car if I’ve had more than one beer, 1 glass of wine or a single shot of booze.
If you drive drunk, lock em up.

Yup, though if one has it as part of a drunk driving conviction that's a little different in my eyes.

And yes re the inaccuracy. That's still a problem widespread. I forget the particular but here in MA recently a ton of convictions were thrown out due to machine tampering or something similar

I know people who have been required to have the interlock system..first, no sympathy at all for them just to be clear.

There's a list of things that can set it off as it's only looking for .02 BAC..menthol cigarettes, mouthwash, certain marinades in food just off my skull but I know there is a lot more.

I've firsthand seen someone who did not partake any of those things blow over that threshold more than once as well.

I don't think that's how it would work as it would be extremely dangerous. I'm thinking that, with literally every new vehicle on the market having a constant cellular connection (even the cheapest vehicles), it might just transmit a message to the mother ship that you're potentially driving drunk. Government/LE will need to figure out what to do with that info. And with that constant cellular connection and integrated GPS, the mother ship can easily track exactly where you are and the info for every sensor in the vehicle.

If you ever wonder why people are seemingly paranoid about the ever-expanding "internet of things", this is just a small example.
