I just purchased my new 2016 Tacoma. I've tried doing my research on the bed caps and camper shells and I'm leaning towards the shell. I've read threads about this matter but I'm just trying to gather as much as I can to better decide on what I should purchase. Thoughts on leer 100xr?

I haven't really been happy with the quality of any of the canopies I've seen, but I'm also not going to lose any sleep over it. Went Leer 100XR.

If you read long enough, you'll see that they've all got their flaws.
I've been very pleased with my Snugtop Rebel. There were some minor items I would have QC'd just because I'm a little picky, but I've had it almost a year now and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Just stick with a reputable dealer and you should have a little less to worry about.

Is there a cap off an older model truck (if so, which one) like a basic work truck cap or non-fitted camper cap that would fit? I see used caps for free to $500 all the time.

There is a massive hole on each side at the front of the bed, under the side rail caps. Too big for silicone. The OEM tonneau comes with a plug on each side that fills ~95% of the gap but also requires a small notch taken out of the rail cap.

Happy with my Leer 180 for two weeks. No leaks in moderate rain. I prefer the extra headroom.

All good information here and replies. I guess if anything I've deducted from this is that I need to shop around and make sure I have a reputable dealer and installer. Great looking trucks, too!

I am in the market for a new cap for my 2016 DC too. I have been looking at ARE as well as Leer. I am looking at the 100XQ, but got a quote today for $2700 with only one option so that's a lot but it looks nice. FWIW, I have put Leer 100R canopies on my last 2 Tacomas (2000 reg cab and 2008 DC) and neither of them leaked a drop in the last 12 years I been using them. Pretty sure I will just go back to Leer based on that. That said, both my 2000 and my 2008 were silver, and Leer never got the paint exactly right. It wasn't terrible, but if you had a critical eye, you could tell they were two different colors. Attached is a pic of the 2008 with a 100r, which is the cheap one, but did great by me the last 8 years.

How much are you getting quoted for the 100R?

I am looking at the 100XR and 100XQ, with the only option being the rack rails. This is the quote I got:

    "
for the leer 100xr with tracks $2005.00

fort he leer 100xq with tracks $2695.00

both painted and installed 2-3 weeks out"

    I am in Portland, OR.

The 100R has been great but I want to upgrade to the center door latch. I think for the one in the photo, I paid about $1250, but that was in 2008.

My vote would be 100XR, but camper shells aren't really bro, so I probably won't put one on my truck, even though they are pretty practical.

My local caper shell guy said that cab highs give 8% better fuel economy o_O personally I don't see how the "increased" aerodynamics could offset the extra weight.

I went with the snugtop rebel for my 2015, but it cost a lot. Haven't had any issues though. I went with it for the extra carry weight of the reinforced upgrade.

It's perfect for what I do, the prinsu roof rack on the cab and cap carries anything long. And my tools/stuff can be dry and secure inside the shell. Only problem now is I need to upgrade my rear springs with all the extra weight.
