Getting away from the OP subject for a second, Ken, you are wrong on the V8 to V4 mode for GM. I am not familiar with the Ford system, but I have worked on and repaired the GM Active Fuel Management system, and the valves are NOT open during management. The lifters for the specific 4 cylinders are a special design that when operated by the AFM system, actually collapse instead of pushing on the pushrod. This makes the valves not open.

In order to deactivate a cylinder, the exhaust valve is prevented from opening after the power stroke and the exhaust gas charge is retained in the cylinder and compressed during the exhaust stroke. Following the exhaust stroke, the intake valve is prevented from opening. The exhaust gas in the cylinder is expanded and compressed over and over again and acts like a gas spring. As multiple cylinders are shut off at a time (cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7 for a V8), the power required for compression of the exhaust gas in one cylinder is countered by the decompression of retained exhaust gas in another. When more power is called for, the exhaust valve is reactivated and the old exhaust gas is expelled during the exhaust stroke. The intake valve is likewise reactivated and normal engine operation is resumed. The net effect of cylinder deactivation is an improvement in fuel economy and likewise a reduction in exhaust emissions. General Motors was the first to modify existing, production engines to enable cylinder deactivation, with the introduction of the Cadillac L62 "V8-6-4" in 1981.

Just face the facts, Tacoma's get 19mpg, that's all they'll ever get no matter what you do.

Wait, but methane is lighter than air right? One should be really careful storing balloons filled with methane, you might lift-off and go flying! :)

Interesting. According to the Wikipedia article, there's a solenoid valve that uses engine oil pressure to alter the lifter operation (either collapse or normal).

That is correct. actually there are multiple solenoids. It really is an interesting operation. Another reason you should change your oil on a regular basis if you have one of those engines.

It was partly sarcasm. I get around 25 in my truck consistently, I just laugh when I see people arguing saying that something will never work.

I just feel like any of these "how do I increase my mpg?" threads always turn into a "nothing works it's all snake oil", filters, treatments, oil, gadgets, chips etc.

And BrokenTusk, I had Torque and I guarantee you that mpg calculator is incorrect. Had my truck averaging 40+ mpg according to that thing. And yes I did set my engine displacement in the settings.

Torque is awesome, minus the mpg calculator, everything about it is pretty accurate.

A buddy of mine got sucked into that and tried to get me in. "you can buy in and have exclusive local territory" he says... "20% increase in fuel economy" I told him to let me know how things were going in a year, and track his mileage so I could be sold on the idea. He never said anything more, and about a year later I tried asking how things were going... Ya know how people never like to admit they got screwed??? Well, supposedly there is more testing that needs to be done and while his mileage WAS slightly higher (avg 1-2 mpg) there were some problems with the system, blah blah blah....
I can average 1-2 mpg difference just by being aware how I drive.
Just another voice here, but from actual interaction with someone who tried.
I would pass if I were the OP, or anyone else.

Yeah. As I have mentioned, the THEORY is very sound. The application is the key. The guy I knew that has the system he made worked, and he did get a small increase in MPG. But again, it takes a LOT of electricity to make it work, and the bigger the engine, the more difficult it is. Those little Geo 3 cylinder engines are the easiest to do with a larger alternator. Even if you don't like the stuff, or call it snake oil, remember that back in the day they said that unleaded gasoline was a bunch of snake oil in IT'S day when it was being talked about. I still remember the days of leaded gasoline and the hardened valve seats that required it!

    This is snake oil scam.
The only way to get better mileage would be to make gasoline engine more efficient or use Electric engine. Breaking down hydrogen and pumping back to engine makes as much common sense as saying that you can pull yourself out of water by pulling your own hair. Makes for good laugh and sad realization how bad education system is if people fall for something like that.
The easiest way to get 20 mpg + on 4x4 truck is ......drive slower. Keep tire pressure up.

You can continue to "mention" it all you want but you are still wrong. The theory is not sound. It is nonsense.
