This is going to be bad, but I have a feeling not as bad as Chernobyl. Their reactor failed at running condition, not at shutdown condition like these ones are. Chernobyl’s reactor flash boiled the water out of the reactor due to a power spike and had a steam explosion expelling reactor fuel and control rods. Then proceeded to have graphite fuel rods catch on fire in the reactor. Also the core continued to react, go through the containment vessel and the remaining fuel turned into a big molten blob that went down into the sub basement. These Japanese reactors are more of a residual heat problem, they are at low power and they are of a different type of design. And they are not burning graphite which was the major contributor to the fallout from Chernobyl.

I think you're correct when you look at any single instance. It's never good. It's like a passenger plane crashing--and a lot of them have. One is a lot of dead people. But we continue to fly just as we continue to drive in cars that routinely kill thousands each year.

But look at what happened in Japan and you can say the plants are doing well given the 9.0 quake. Are things in a bad way? Yes. But all things considered, the current situation is far better than Chernobyl ATM.

Nuclear power is still pretty safe, clean and efficient.

YEah and despite the INEVITABLE warnings. Californians worry about the world's "ecology" then build their own homes on the edge of dry canyon brush, build homes partly on stilts over a canyon or ocean view.....When the big one roughs up California, it will be a lot worse than Japan. San Onofre is built right on the water's edge near San Diego.. Having been stationed on a nuk sub for a few years living within feet of the core, I am not worried about a few Rads. I am still pro nuc and fossil fuel. I am against stupidity of those who build homes on a couple sticks over the edge of dry brush for a "view" in mudslide and earthquake country and surely they should not be telling the rest of the US how to live.....

Just like the hazardous waste ash coming from coal plants in larger quanities than nuclear waste. not as radioactive but a hazardous waste also.

Compared to the pollutants generated when fossil fuels are mined, burnt and the byproducts stored in huge pools of waste, nuclear plants are pretty clean.

Gotta love enegy demands. If you go buy an electric vehicle, purity and the love of mother nature upon you ,right?
Truth is you will be charging from coal, nuclear, or a dam over a river most likely.
I still would like to convert a gen1 into an electric truck though.

A truck would be an epic commuter electric. just load the box up with batteries, you could get a 200 miles range with that many.

1 Sievert of radiation is equal to 100 Rads.
    1000 millisieverts is = to 100 Rads

Levels of radiation outside the plant have now fallen from 1,000 millisieverts an hour to 600-800. A single dose of 1,000 millisieverts can cause temporary radiation sickness

    Fukushima Daiichi crisis

    • Reactor 1: Was first to be rocked an explosion on Saturday; fuel rods reportedly 70% damaged
    • Reactor 2: There are fears a blast on Tuesday breached a containment system; fuel rods reportedly 33% damaged
    • Reactor 3: Explosion on Monday; smoke or steam seen rising on Wednesday; damage to roof and possibly also to a containment system
    • Reactor 4: Hit by a major blaze on Tuesday and another fire on Wednesday

I have been listening to NHK Radio Japan out of Yamata on my shortwave and they give about one third urgency that we hear on our media to this situation. We have more information on this than they do. Playing a lot of calming piano music too-really not helping their people:(

I think they are just trying to keep the peace and calm down the public. Did you hear the emporer's broadcast? He said almost nothing about the situation. Just stay calm in our time of need and help your neighbors..
