Thoughts on Japans nuke plant blowing up....

Why?

 

Japan's government spokesman Yukio Edano played down worries of a nuclear catastrophe, saying the metal vessel enveloping the reactor itself was still intact, despite the destruction of the building around it.

 

Edano said radiation around the plant did not increase after the explosion and was actually decreasing. He added that pressure in the reactor was also down.

If the containment vessel around the reactor has not been touched, it should act as a layer of defence to prevent radiation from escaping

 

yea, double walled reactors is kinda a minimum standard after chyrnobyl. Least theres good news coming out of this.

That's just IMO...but because the amount of energy/power we get from the nuclear plants only lasts us about 10-20 years because the plants start to diminish, because radiation bascially wrecks anything and everything..and we are left with enormous amounts of nuclear waste/radiation and the half-life of this stuff is around 100,000 years...is 10-20 years of nuclear power worth baby sitting nuclear waste and trying to figure where to store this waste so it won't come out and leak or do anything to harm the Earth and humans? We're stuck watching over this nuclear waste for thousands of years now and we can't find any way to safely dispose of it..it just isn't worth it to me.

 

Well at least I got all my parts before everyone on the West Coast starts growing a third arm out of their forehead.

 

But you are not looking at the amount of energy it produces over the 10-20 year period, much greater than that of other power plants. I don't know the answer so don't roast me, but what has larger reprecussions, 1 nuclear plant, or X number of coal (or other) plants that it replaces?

 

I don't know any like specifics and I'm not saying I know alot, just saying what I've learned from in school and what i can remember..you could be right about that, but the amount of nuclear waste we're dealing with is massive, and we cannot just stuff it under the ground like we think we can...it will come up...my teacher said something about if we were to get rid of it all(to outer space), we would have to send a space shuttle full of the waste out to space Every day, for like 20 years or something..can't remember, but it's insane

 

Coal plants are more destructive by far. When stored properly, its just a set it and forget it kind of thing. The amount of land used for nuclear waste storage is nothing when you start considering the amount of land used for old military equipment storage alone. AND, Nuke plants don't just have a 10-20 year life. They are refueled with new nuclear source material to keep providing power.

Also, nuclear waste works just like magnetism, It's strength drops exponentially even by just distancing yourself a few feet from it. The numbers it takes to be destructive is really really high.

 

Also, stored old nuke source material is stuff that has given off most of its radiation already. Hence why its old and stored.

 

750 is IDLH limit, occupational limit is like 25 i think... just took the refresher course 2 months ago.
