here's a good clip i found from msnbc that gives a good run down on the whole nuclear process and the risks that they are facing over there right now...this clip was before the recent explosion at one of the reactor buildlings

can't tell how bad the released was when it exploded, but it will melt. The government won't give us the full scope of any situation, we always find out later how bad things are

So just watching the news. Some guy died in cresent city in nor cal while taking pictures of the tsunami hitting california.

Not to be an insensitive dick but... When a tsunami is potentially coming your way you probably shouldn't stand on the rocks or shoreline trying to take pictures.

I think a lot of people don't under nuclear power... all they really know is nuclear bombs... if this thing melts down it will not explode like a nuclear bomb. The news should really report that. I've heard a bunch of people with that misconception... it will sort of fizzle and burn and possible smaller explosions caused by non-nuclear things... but no thermonuclear detonation.

Additionally, the fallout that reaches the U.S will be minor and miniscule by most standards.

btw, I've worked within essentially a Nuclear Power plant and understand quite a bit about them

From stand point of being a professional geographer. Nuclear fall out dispersal is most immediate within the fall out area. Having said that radiation fall out can and will travel for thousands of miles. Great example would be Chernobyl's fall out traveling to Norway. What happens is that radiation attaches itself to airborne particles that get carried great distances by jet streams. As a secondary concern one needs to look at the water current patterns. Consequently many of world's fisheries are located in asia. Also important thing to keep in mind is that just because a thing has been subjected to radiation... it does not make it radioactive. On the other hand consumption of fish suffering from cell decay is not exactly healthy either.

As a final note Chernobyl's fall out map is a great example of how quickly and how far radiation fall out is detected. Once in a jet stream fall out particles can engulf entire northern or southern hemisphere to various degree of contamination.

oh don't get me wrong the fallout will be terrible around the site in Japan... but we really don't have anything to worry about over here

Nuclear power is incredibly efficient and effective. I personally think we should have more of them here in the US. Nuclear waste storage is very evolved technology and can be safely stored for decades with little side effects...

btw, most nuclear waste from power plants are stored on site in giant pools of water or boric acid to prevent ionizing radiation. After about a year the waste is then moved to dry storage... usually concrete encased containers.

I've personally touched one of the container with waste inside and did not register a single fraction of a rad on my dosimeter.

I don't think they will let us in on anything serious because they don't want to cause massive panick. We won't know shit hit the fan until the place is on fire. They are trying sea water to cool the thing but I don't think its working.

So if the radiation does float our way what will 750rads do to us. Need to know if im going to file my tax return or not! lol

I was just watching CNN and at 2:25PST they had an "I-reporter" named August so-n-so on scene videoing the explosion and they should've edited his comments out-I quote "yes yes I got it I got it YESSSS!! Sunset in the west (pans left) destruction in the north (pans right) YEAH! WOOHOOOO!!! Look at da SMOKE LOOK AT IT beautiful!! ok ok I'm runnin I'm runnin (runs towards blast area)

NO HEART CNN. People dying and he's having a good time. Go home August whatever your job is done.
