    I'm not smart enough.
But , if they added the turbine mentioned it too could've met some problem, doesnt seem likely since the steam was still present.

Honestly a wind turbine though, in front of your mouth , might have ample power too .:D

wow Japan really has no luck when it comes to Nukes...

Definitely you can count on the situation being worse than we are being told. how bad? no one can know but be sure it is worse than they say. especially when it is information coming from another country. japan isnt as bad as most and we work with them well so i have to assume we are at least getting "decent" information. by we i mean our government...we "the people" arent going to get squat.

The scary part is that I have a feeling that the nuclear situation is far worse than anyone is admitting. We can only hope that I am wrong though.

So the idea being,.... and I haven't read ANY posts is.. that the nuclear stuff will go so high so fast as to avoid going into russia, but get into the jet stream?

I'm assuming its not a pre first gen reactor and not a problem.

Scanning back through I see the call for nuc experts went un-answered. I'm not much of one, but I have had to study them a bit for work and am not worried at all, and I'm a hell of a lot closer than all y'all.

Of course its bad. You dont use sea water to quench a reactor, unless its a last resort.

The reactor that blew was 40 years old. IIRC, Its a Gen 1 reactor.

They say this seawater cooling thing they are doing has never been tried before-an experiment in the making.

Aside from the salt in the water speeding up the corosion of the vessel, and the potential for radiating the local watering supply, what could go wrong?

Besides the big things like seaweed etc. getting stuck in pumps and clogging lines. The big issue with using liquid of any kind, is the dissolved solids. Same principle as putting sugar in your coffee. It's still in there, just bonded with the liquid. When you boil off the water it leaves all these dissolved solids behind, like the sea salt. Creating what would seem like a growing in thickness kind of scale over time. Eventually, and it doesn't take that long either, the scale becomes so thick that the heat transfer wont actually be pulling the heat from the steel containers, creating hot spots, which will melt the steel and burst the wall. As soon as the steel melts enough, the scale wont hold pressure and falls apart. thus everything fails. The pressured water will shoot into the direct heat, turning to steam and expanding almost instantly causing the whole thing to blow.

like 80-85% of boiler blow outs are cause by just this, the heat medium (Steel wall) failing.

Also, but not really an issue for this, in water treatment we add bleach to kill the microbes in the water in order to prevent them from becoming stuck in the filters and creating mold. But if they're already at the point of using million of gallons of sea water, I highly doubt they're wasting the time to filter it.

    Insta-Rust Steel Hot dogs anyone?

Wow that is crazy! I would like to know how they are introducing the seawater into the reactor-hopefully they thought of the things you have and at least are screening the lumpy stuff like seaweed at the inlet. That hotspot thing is probably happening at the hottest point-not good:( this whole thing is beyond their control anyway.

Educated guess: the only way to introduce the sea water would have been to use the already existing treated water cooling lines. just hook up a temp water line from the ocean pumps and start pumping.

They wouldn't have had enough time to set up anything else. So i keep hearing, all their normal back up gear failed :s
