He shouldnt have a problem trading back to a 2010 tundra, assuming it has similar equipment. Tacomas hold better resale value than Tundras, therefore you shouldnt have a problem. In fact, most car dealer ships on sell new cars so they can get their hands on used cars. Used cars is where the money is made, new cars have no margin anymore.

Also, car dealers do NOT systematically give people 50% of what they owe on their trade in, no bank would approve financing at 150% of book value.

just my thoughts, carmax might be a little low (still higher than 20k) because they'll straight up buy your car, vs take one in and sell you one (already marked up), but i've never actually tried it

wow....sounds like you're terrible at negotiating. in may of 2011 i paid $23,400 for a brand new 4 cyl access cab 5 spd sr5 4x4. I traded it in to the same dealer exactly one year later with scratches down the side 20k miles on it. I got $21,400 on trade in. I would love to see you a car any day of the week. et me know when you go to trade your tacoma, ill give you 10% then what you plan on tradining it in or.

OP - i just analyzed the Manheim auction report (this is where most dealers buy their used vehicles) and they are currently paying roughly $25-26K for your vehicle. You should expect somewhere in this range.

Also, i wouldnt look at a 3 year old tundra for $29k. With the rebates, you can get a new one with the 4.7 4x4 SR5 for roughly the same price as the used one.

    x2, you have roughly a 32K truck new, at 1-2 years old and 22K miles, i don't think you'll have a prob getting 24-26K

I've done it two or three times. Not quite 150%, but when I bought my '91 Escort I still owed 2k on my '88 Topaz. Credit Union gave me 14k on the Escort (sticker was $11+ fees).
Did the same thing buying the wife's '00 Echo.

In today's economy and tight credit, it's a lot less likely to happen, but they can and do still push the limits, and credit unions are far more likely to do it than normal bank financing.
Banks will easily finance over book to cover taxes, license, and other fees, so a truck on the lot at $29k might actually finance out (without a trade) at $31k... if book is $33k, there's still $4k to play with.

Just KNOW your numbers. Don't let the salesman rope you into buying a monthly payment. That's one way they fuck you. They get you to ignore the same price and the trade value and "sell" you the $300/mo.

When I bought my Taco, I asked the salesman where Carmax was getting their cars.

    He said "From my customers"

    WTF?

"Ya... I'll make someone a trade offer and they'll tell me that Carmax will buy it outright for 10% more"

You're going to get roughly right around 25.5K as long as you don't need tires, you don't have any major door dings, no lights on, etc. I pulled my numbers right from what they go for @ auction. I'm a sales manager @ a used car dealership and that's what I'd put in it. I'd take off for that scratch which would cost me $300 to make it look new again. You should be fine.

I had an auto trader offer of 23,500 with honest evaluation of condition. Dealer and I are talking about a possible 2K difference between the two. Sounds like the offer might be in the 25-27K range and they have some flexibility on the Tundra. Also same dealer we bought the Highlander at so they want the repeat business. Trying to get there monday or tuesday to sit and talk numbers, but that depends on Jury duty or not. I will let you all know what happens.

Got 26K for it, had offers from dealers of 25.5 to 27 in colorado. 2011 Tacoma, 4xr4 Sr5, TRD Off road w/extra value package with roof rack. 22k miles 1 bad scratch at tailgate.

Picked up a 2009 Tundra Limited TRD off Road Crew Max 55K miles and topper for 29.8K. I feel it was a great deal for what was included.
