Thoughts on this Craigslist 1st gen?

Hey all, joined recently and have been ghosting to learn what I can.

I'm currently in the market for a 1st gen, it will be my first truck. I want to make it an overland adventure vehicle as well as a daily driver. I have limited knowledge of cars in general beyond basic maintenance (do my own oil, brakes, filters). I'm hoping to learn a lot.

First thread comes with a question. I'm browsing private sellers in my area, and came across one I like:

Seller has informed me that the lift consists of adjustable shocks in the front (not sure what kind) and a block lift in the back. I'm not a fan of the block, would it be a big hassle to remove that and add the necessary components for a rear suspension lift? (AAL, shocks, whatever)

Finally, thoughts on this truck in general? What questions should I be asking, any specific things to watch out for?

Curious to know what there is to know about my new whip and learn all the ins and outs.

 

Pretty clean truck. Make sure you're "okay" with it being 2wd as it will limit some but not a lot of your overlanding options. You will get stuck more often/need extra recovery gear/friends. Many on here have 2wd and zero complaints but just know that's one of those things if you want it you're better off getting it from the start...

Well I love it and I don't mind it being 2wd. I don't plan on taking it off-road anytime soon. But I will make sure I have a friend or two in calls reach if I do.

 

Oh but I'll ask..what's your opinion on plasti dip or custom grilles?

Thanks! I'm not too concerned about getting 4x4. The two reasons are because I don't plan to do tons of offroading/crawling, more of just general adventuring; the second reason is that I've heard 4x4s get considerably worse mileage even in 2wd. Is that true? Since it's my daily driver, MPG is one of the things on the list.

Would you foresee any issues buying a truck with a rear block lift if I have the intention to upgrade that to a suspension lift?

No issues changing the lift besides maybe a few rusted bolts

A locker would be nice, even for "general adventuring." Fuel economy for 4wd is less than 2wd, but I wouldn't call it considerably less.

 

That's way too much money, I got my 2003 xtra cab 4x4,automatic, v6 TRD off-road with 147,000 miles, and fox 2.5's front and back for 7000$ in socal, mind you I got a good deal, but he's asking the price you'd sell a v6 4x4 TRD off-road with like 150,000 miles would go for

 

I wanted the option of 4WD if needed. I'm mostly on pavement (everyday driver) but the longer I own my truck the more and more I want to regear it, get lockers, supercharge it... This hobby is expensive but well worth it to me. I've already thrown $4-5k at her and there's a lot more to go! Congrats on your soon to be Tacoma!

 

Ditto. I plan on improving my dirt-to-asphalt ratio starting this summer. I'm still looking for a deal on rims like yours. I'm torn between those and the seven spoke FJ/4Runner trail rims.

 

They're out there brother. I've seen them a few times on CL. I think you can get them on Amazon or EBay as well but they're a bit more pricier.

Not too many options for off-roading in DFW area. Hopefully moving back to the Blue Ridge mountains/Smokey Mountains area and start getting this truck dirty!

 

I like those fj's as well. They look pretty tuff!

Any reason for that? I'm not trying to race anybody, I think MPH is more important than speed and I can't imagine the 2.7L i4 doesn't have enough torque for casual adventuring.

 

MPH or MPG? the v6 is considered a better engine. the 5vzfe and the 22re are considered legendary in the toyota fandom. at least that's my understanding...
