I'm guessing that's gotta be the case...seems like an odd place for it to twist itself and snap off unless there was already a big cut or dent there from something hitting it.

I don’t think the bolts sheered, the loud clunky and dropping was the two halves dropping down.

"Wasn't doing anything crazy" is an understatement.
That drive shaft was spinning one way and you slammed it in opposite direction .

I don't buy that at all. You're telling me a seized rusty U joint isn't going to break free before the driveshaft turns itself into a Red Vine?

That shaft had to have been previously damaged. It's a 2 year old truck!

Wow , you gotta send that pic to the Spicer company who produce these driveshafts for the Tacoma as well as many other domestic vehicles
I would like to hear what they have to say o_O

From @Boghog1 's link at the top of this page...looks like it was probably a combo of the wrong things at the wrong time

I know we’re all guessing because the OP hasn’t responded yet but I don’t think the driveshaft was rusty. I think that’s east coast red clay/mud.

Maybe the twist popped the heads off the bolt, from tension, not shear.

Dont know the steel, tube dia, or wall thickness....
But first order accuracy (back of napkin) says that takes statically about full engine torque in 1st gear... (approximately)

(Assumed 30 ksi fsu, 2.5 OD, 0.06 wall... just for shits and grins)
