Thread. Maintence required dash light on

Hoping for some help! I went to get into my truck today to go get something to eat and I started it up and went to put it into reverse and out of the corner of my eye I saw a light ive never seen on before the maintence required light came on and flashed for 10 seconds after I started the truck and then shut off I read the owners manual and it said replace engine oil so I had a havoline 18$ coupon so I take it to them and they change it and turned the light off. Main thing I wanted to know is why did it flash and then stop right after I start? I thought it was supposted to stay on? Thanks for the input

 

It does that for a few miles ( I forget how many) after you hit the 5k, then after a few more miles it stays on until you reset it. Nothing to be concerned about.

 

When you get 4,500 miles after an oil change and reset of the light it will do as you described blink for a bit then turn off. This only means that you are getting close to needing an oil change. When you get to 5,000 miles it will come on steady and remain on until you reset it after the oil is changed.

Engine oil replacement reminder light

• Illuminates for about 3 seconds and then flashes for about 15 seconds: Indicates that the engine oil is scheduled to be changed. Check the engine oil, and change if necessary.

• Comes on and remains:
Indicates that the engine oil should be changed. Check and change the engine oil.


To reset:

■After changing the engine oil (U.S.A. only)

The engine oil maintenance data should be reset. Perform the following procedures:
Switch the display to the trip meter A when the engine is running. (→P. 157)
Turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
While pressing the ODO / TRIP button (→P. 157),
Turn the engine switch to the ON position.
Continue to press and hold the button until the odometer displays 000000.
