Recently my 1996 Tacoma had begun experiencing intermittent bogging under acceleration and was idling higher than usual. After taking my truck to a local mechanic the issue was traced to my throttle body. After replacing the TPS sensor the truck was still throwing a code and idling high. Further inspection has confirmed that the throttle body itself is badly worn out. My mechanic was unable to locate a replacement and after doing some research I've found out that Toyota has discontinued producing the throttle body for my truck (PN 22210-75190). The few used throttle bodies I've come across look to be in rough shape or are difficult to confirm fitment. I have been able to locate a throttle body for a 1997 Tacoma (PN 22210-75210) but have been unable to confirm if this is compatible with my truck. I'm hoping someone on here may be able to confirm if the 97 part number is compatible with my 96 or if there are any reliable online retailers that sell something that will work. I appreciate any advise or recommendations.

ToyotaPartsDeal says 22210-75210 fits your truck.
If it doesn't send it back.

    Worth a shot.

I'd try finding someone who can rebuild your original throttle body. There was a company that many on here used to use, but that company is no longer around. I'm sure other companies can do that kind of work

Did he check the IAC? Did he use OEM TPS? Had issues with both those and I have same year and engine. OEM parts, and fixing vac line leaks fixed it. Also cleaned intake to block and am sure that helped. Everyone says the TB should close fully but my 3RZ doesn’t and still idles 700rpm.

Bogging doesn’t sound like a worn out throttle body. Worn out as I have read here means throttle plate and throat has worn and letting more air in which equals high idle. Some info here about adding washer to throttle body pivot to take out slack. Maybe search for that.

And getting rid of that cast exhaust manifold and putting in an ‘02 pipe style will get rid of cracks, leaks, P0420 codes and have more low end pep.

You mentioned codes. What are they?

I found PN 22210-75210 on ToyotaPartsDeal as well but was a bit skeptical being that it was the only site I'd found that indicated it would fit my truck. I searched around on this forum and found a lot of feedback that made it seem like that site was rather unreliable. I did come across several posts that indicated nucar (Toyota of North Attleboro) was a reliable site. They had the same PN available and I attempted to purchase the throttle body but they reached out to me and indicated that if the part did not work they could not take it back. I asked if they could confirm fitment and they said that they could not and actually recommended that I post on this forum to see if anyone had actually put the 97 PN on a 96 Tacoma, hence my post.

I did notice a lot of posts also about Maxbore and that unfortunately that was no longer an option. Does anyone else have a recommendation for reputable rebuild option?

I'm not sure if my mechanic checked the IAC. I do know that the TPS sensor was replaced with an OEM replacement. I was told my truck was/is throwing code P0120 - Throttle position sensor "A" circuit problem. My mechanic said that the scan tool he used to monitor the TPS sensor during a test drive showed the sensor to be very erratic under heavy acceleration. After cleaning the throttle body and replacing the TPS sensor the truck was still idling higher than usual (around 1100-1200rpm) and the check engine light remained on. His best guess was that the throttle body shaft was badly worn out and that the added movement in the shaft was causing a vacuum leak and therefor not allowing the TPS sensor to properly calibrate and causing the constant check engine light.

I'll definitely look into the washer to throttle body pivot that was mentioned.

A stuck open IAC will certainly give you a 1100-1200 idle.

    Yes, manual everything...even mirrors...
IMO, go to Toyota's online part network. You can punch in your VIN and then when you enter part #'s it'll tell you whether or not its a direct fit for your exact truck based on VIN/Part # combo.

DO NOT just enter year/model - that's not specific and won't yield good results in the catalog search. My example below says "2000 Tacoma" but that's after I entered my VIN in so it was an exact match. And always search by part #, not description or name. If it doesn't fit it'll say so like the last pic below.

I do this for literally every OEM part I buy to confirm fitment. I google part #'s to get me close (sometimes i'm right on the money) then confirm this way before purchase. Plus you know it's a legit OEM part right from dealer network.

Shop around different Toyota dealers though - this one was the closest to me, but I rarely use it because their prices suck compared to dealers farther away who offer free shipping sometimes.

Note: also, snap a pic (or save your email confirmations) when you get the part so you have your own catalog for your truck on your phone. I do that as well. Exact part + timestamp of when I got it/did the work = awesome tool to have on hand for the future. Will save you time having to look up the same part again.

I say this whenever someone has idle issues and high mileage, do a leak down test. When valves start to go on the 3rz you will have idle issues. The throttle body is less likely to be bad by itself, but the IACV sensor attached to it needs cleaning/replacement or it can be an issue. Clean the air sensor on the intake as well.

hence why I just replaced the whole unit - brand new IAC, throttle position sensor, and coolant bypass valve

it’s cheap enough I’d rather kill 3 birds with one stone if I’m there anyways

    Peace of mind!
