I was cleaning my throttle body and MAF sensor and for the first time decided to plug it in and open the butterfly using the throttle. I had the pedal held to what should be wide open throttle and it only opened maybe 20%. I thought nothing of it because the engine was not running and I figured the computer would not let it open all the way without the engine running. as I am driving home today, I went to give it some gas and it seemed to not want to go. Was my observed observation of the throttle body with the engine turned off he normal occurrence, or should it have opened all the way?IMG_20190505_150526.jpg IMG_20190505_150517.jpg IMG_20190505_150503.jpg

It's an electronically controlled throttle, will only move when engine running.

Lies. I can hear mine open up to any and all throttle pedal movement without the engine running.

It did open some, just not all the way. I haven't removed that filter mounted in the air filter housing otherwise, I'd put the scope down and watch it.

Maybe a dumb question but was the ignition key in the "run" position?

It seems weird sometimes on the highway; I'll give it some gas but it doesn't seem to do anything. Seems like it almost gets stuck then it downshifts.

Not an expert on this, and I haven't tried it with mine (and don't plan to) but what you saw makes sense to me... there's more to the electronic throttle than "pedal's on the floor, throttle plate should be wide open!", that's kinda the point (to allow things like traction/stability control) of switching from cable throttles. The ECU is taking pedal position into account, along with many other factors, and not opening more than necessary given ALL the variables.

I do not think stability and traction control were available in '06. I do have the mechanical LSD though

Did you pull the battery cable after the cleaning?

Might want to try that, it has to relearn its base/starting position sometimes after cleaning

I did not. I let it run for a few and noticed the idle was high then it started dropping then stop and drop a little more and stop again until it was at it's usual idle.
I suspect buildup was being compensated for by holding the butterfly open a bit more than when it's clean.

normal, otherwise you'd have a P0121 or P2112 code. The ECM only tells it to open up so far based on MAF, ECT, engine load, etc.

The throttle plate should have opened all the way. I do this for a living and have noticed that the only Toyota vehicles that do not open when the accelerator is depressed are the hybrids. What OP is describing may be an intermittent failure of a component. Had one of those about a week ago, throttle body assembly was going bad and would stop responding periodically for several minutes at a time and then go back to normal.

Here's an easy way to test, just hook up 12 volts to the motor and watch it to see if it'll open all the way up.

Again the ECM monitors the current in the circuit and the position feedback based on demand, if something was not right with it you'd have a check engine light on as I mentioned above.

Right after i started it, i had 2 codes. P 0102 and P0133. Both related to what I was working on. Reset them and they're gone they haven't returned after a couple hundred miles.
The throttle body connector has 6 wires. I ass u me 2 for the motor, 2 for a throttle position sensor, and 2 for....? This is a guess atm because i haven't chased down wiring diagrams.
As for hooking up 12v to it; I have a small variable power supply that i made back in high school a loooooong time ago. I will have to find it and blow the dust off of it, then hope the filter caps don't explode when I turn it on. Lol

If you depress the pedal right now will the throttle plate open? I just did a service on a Highlander with the 2gr and with KOEO (key on engine off) and a pedal depressor on the throttle the plate opened all the way.
