I don’t know the number. I had someone read the code. Hopefully when I get the new throttle body on there I will have the codes cleared and I will ask them.

I thought I heard of restoring a tps function by open and closing the throttle 100 times to clean up electrical contact area of the wiper mechanism.

May not be true but thought I'd mention it .

Yes I saw the same thing. I did try it (felt kinda crazy while I was doing it and made sure nobody was watching). After I finally got my leg from not cramping anymore I tried testing to see if it work and it didn’t for me.

Front and rear diffs re-geared to 4.88 dirty 30 drive axles. and a rhino pack clutch. Custom exhaust and huge mudflaps!
2004 has a different TPS = throttle-body and tps are as one unit called fly-by wire totally electronic and a UN-servicable piece of shit. i actually went back to a 2002 year because the throttle body is cable pulled. my 2004 developed a high rpm 2/3rd full boost miss-fire that would not trip the engine light but you'd feel the miss-fire under boost and back then the throttle-body was $1600.00 from Toyota and its the only fix. if you look at it the actual tps is mounted to the side where it plugs in with the wires. and it operates the butterfly in the intake. no tps input and the butterfly valve wont move, this is why yours moves only at 2\3 throttle. but there is yellow paint on the set screws of the tps and if you mess with it toyota can tell. when the throttle body is connected up in test mode they can loosen the 2 screws\bolts and twist the assembly then they lock the screws and put yellow security paint on the lock bolts\nuts. but it will not fix it if you go fooling around with it and could make the truck not start. and so you know anytime your cel or engine light is on your trucks timing will retard 7 degrees to avoid engine damage. thanks for the safety toyota and taking away lots of power from the system. I know what im talking about here folks i have tested 2001-2004 and 2001-2002 are the best years. 2003-2004 does have some minute accel increase speed due to the electric throttle-body but were not racing the 4x4's

I thought the fly by wire was an electronic control throttle body and does not have a cable connected to the throttle body. Mine does have a cable as shown earlier in the thread. Also my TPS and throttle body are all not one unit.

The early Tacoma's with ETCS didn't, they had a cable going to an APP (Accelerator Pedal Position) sensor mounted on the side of the throttle body and the Electronic Throttle Control motor and TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) was mounted on the other side.

03-04 is fly by wire. The only difference is that the APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor) is located on the throttle body and actuated by the cable which in turn controls the throttle motor. If your sensor/a fails and your throttle motor will not operate you can still limp home using the slight amount of mechanical leverage on the throttle plate.

when I read about stupid design changes like this for the 03-04, which I have an 03, makes me wish I could take a baseball bat to the engineers that made this change from the 01-02. Really stupid thing to do when the earlier model worked just fine. Sometimes I think they do this so that more money goes from your pockets into theirs when shit breaks.

it's also about innovation and moving forward. almost all manufacturers were moving towards electronic control, Toyota tried their hand during 01-02 T4R and then changed 03-04 Tacoma to follow suit. 03+ T4R and 05+ Tacoma all are electronic controlled as well as their other lines now.

knock on wood I have no issues with mine other than the slightly high/low idle that is mostly caused by cleaning the built up oil residue from the TB butterfly plate.

Alright, I replaced the throttle body with a brand new one from Toyota. It came with the TPS mounted and ready to go. $480 dollars later the truck is doing the same exact thing. Didn’t help whatsoever. I am lost. Computer?

Well that’s disappointing. The only other culprits I could think of is a possible bad ECU or a short somewhere I the wire harness.

Out of curiosity do you have something like a UltraGauge or ScanGauge?

Really need the code number at a minimum to continue troubleshooting, need to have it scanned or get yourself a cheap obd reader that will also do live data.

I checked the wiring harness from the ecm to the plug on the pedal position sensor. No broken wires or bad connections. Looks like ecm to me.

Did you measure the resistance values at the ecm ?
Post # 30 shows you how to check values at the throttle body .
Using your dvom , test the wires going into the ecm . disconnect the wiring harness at the ecm and back probe the wiring . you should get the same values .
Battery disconnected when you test for ohms

How do your grounding wires look ?

Your truck is a 2004 . Its not uncommon for hidden wires to have issues in 17 years
