here is a video of my situation. Is this normal for these tacos? Mines is a 2.7 and I feel like they need to be tightened, but not sure if they are supposed to have some level of slack.

Let me know what you think, thanks!

I tightened both lines a smallish amount today because I figured it needed it after ~250k miles.,and because I've seen others with different cars have to adjust their throttle cables because they became loose over time.

I drove around today and felt that I did not need to press the gas pedal as much to get the truck moving. I also noticed that it changed gears faster than before. I don't know if this is will be a problem because I've researched a bit online, and have gathered that it can be bad for the transmission if it changes gears too fast. Not sure what the treshold on that is for these trucks though.

on the lower cable, the one with the black cap, that is you Transmission Throttle pressure adjustment. The little silver tit that is sticking out in your video should not be sticking out that far. it should be flush with the end of the rubber. The trans should shift "normal" after that.

Thank you for this piece of information! I have since adjusted the cables and the truck runs great now with "normal" trans shift

Both my cables seem to have alot of slack on my 02 Tacoma 2.7 3rz 4cyl . How much deflection in the cables is there supposed to be when adjusted properly ??

    Here's what I did:

Aligned the nipple flush with the black rubber piece on the lower cable.

    upload_2019-4-28_16-15-18.jpg

After that, I aligned the top cable's screw with the lower cable's screw teeth. The lower cable had about 5 teeth separating one end from the nut, so I did the same with the top one.

    upload_2019-4-28_16-17-45.jpg

Truck runs very fine to me and idles at 700 ± 5 rpms

Thanks !!!! , I did find out that the correct way to adjust the cables to have the gas pedal to the floor . You then try and move the throttle bell crank and if still movement noticed adjust cable to remove slack

As for the transmission kickdown cable keep some slack in it for proper operation

TV cable, loosen both nuts floor it adjust bring the forward nut to the bracket then the rear one to the bracket tighten them together. You need a bit of slack in the throttle cable it does not want to be tight there is more than enough travel in the assembly for WOT.

Its a transmission control cable. Your throttle body on your 04 is different in a couple ways, one being electronic controlled, and no idle air control valve.

It's more than just a kick down cable it affects the entire range. If I remember the stop ring should just touch the outer cable end.

Sorry to jump on such an old thread, wondering if anyone has any insight as to why my idle jumps so much. I have a 2.7 1998 and at a full stop my RPM will drop from around 1k RPM to 700 causing my shifter to shake like crazy and giving the feeling that the car might stall. My cables are roughly as loose as the video above, perhaps a bit less. Thanks for any insight!
