Throttle Controller is a game changer for 2.7

Installed today a 9-Drive Throttle Controller plug-and-play device, cost about $48 shipped from Amazon.

I'm not easily enamored with cheap, disposable consumer items and tend to desire gadgets that approach or are as good as OEM engineering, but after nearly 10 hours of using on city, highway and some spirited driving I have to say the truth - this simple device is a game-changer for the 4cyl gang.

No longer do you have to floor it and worry if your vehicle is going to propel its' way to safety - this of course doesn't increase horsepower but simply advances or tricks the electronic pedal into thinking it's pushed down further than it is. The real-world effect though is that below 45mph, it simply feels more responsive and perhaps more importantly - safer.

So far as you can see from the graph, I have no real difference in fuel economy. Avg about 21mpg, which I'll gladly take. Likely will do better over time as I learn to adapt to the imcreased dynamics.

The effect is incredible and certainly not a gimmick - it makes the 4cyl far more usable and a real viable option vs spending thousands more on a V6 you may not want nor need.

Rarely can I say there's a $40 device that fixes a car. It's that good.

Cons?

It's plastic-y. I'm not necessarily a fan of the somewhat /loose-fitting iPhone plug on the right hand side, may move it over to the left of wheel but for the moment it made sense to install next to the other physical controls I typically reach for with my right hand while left steers.

Also, the color really should be deep blue to match the instrument lighting.

Beyond that, it simply works. The end.

It's so inexpensive that there's no real downside to trying. Completely reversable and can be easily accessed before you take into dealer for instance. Certainly less hesitation in purchasing than the $400 Throttle Commander Controllers accomplishing the same thing.

 

For that price, I’ll give one of these a go. Logic says to push the pedal harder and if this was the only vehicle I drove I’d probably adapt and not think about it. But it feels odd as is, and makes driving a touchy throttle manual trans difficult after some time in the Tacoma

 

i have the same one and a 2.7 completely agree i have mine on a pretty low setting too just makes pushing the pedal easier giving it the quicker response less sluggish feel. I also have mine ziptied up under the dash so its not visible once i found the setting i liked i have no need to change it. I could not drive without it, a tune basically will do that throttle adjustment and more but they are not out for all model year 2.7s yet, plan on pulling this off and doing a tune when its out for my 21 but glad i have this until then.

 

Ran it for 3 years now, no issues. Run on 1.7 mode with my manual transmission. Works good paired with all my other mods done.

 

Yep, there's no tunes available as of yet for 2021+ models with newer 6 speed. However, it works so well I no longer feel it is worth wasting your money when the truck could better do with an amp and better speakers
