Does adding a truck box count?
I bought a 17 Taco XP full cab. Beautiful truck. BUT I HATE the way it accelerates...or rather...lack thereof...at least until it kicks in?

Makes me nervous to try and pull in to traffic sometimes.

I've seen products out there for the transmission shifting (which also seems off to me), but I just want it to GO when I tell it to.

    What's the deal with that?
From what I have read I may not be alone in this, though the dealer seems to think there is nothing wrong with it....

Thanks all - First time Taco owner - First time poster.
I WANT to love this thing but......it's getting harder to... :(

There's a handle that says PRNDL321 or something to that effect. Downshift and put your foot down, that generally helps. The computers will learn.

    Otherwise, turd gen gutless wonder.

Your not alone but I've never had a problem. Off the line yes it is slow and picks up later. I'm assuming your auto?

As some would say here don't drive the truck the way you want it to, you'll just be mad 24/7, your gonna have to learn how to drive it and until the truck learns your driving habits.

Don't expect it to gain power if your rpms are like 1700ish in a higher gear and decide to punch the pedal. ECT button helps most of the time as your rpms are slightly higher in my experience.

Its easy to make claim that the equipment is at fault...most of the time it’s the end user. Throttle by wire requires input so get in the throttle and the tied to a stump feeling will disappear.

Use ECT PWR button. You will see a big increase in throttle response.

Boss, it's just that these "I bought a new Tacoma but hate how it runs" complaints are getting old.

Who the hell doesn't accelerate a vehicle during the test driving phase?!!

    First, welcome to TW.

The driving experience you are describing has been reported by many members who have driven the third gen Tacoma.

There are aftermarket solutions, like pedal commander or Orange Virus tune, but also members report the throttle response improves after time.

How many miles on your truck now?

What vehicle were you driving before the Tacoma?

Using the ECT and shift limiter also help improve the responsiveness.

Plenty of members have done things to improve their driving experience, so there are solutions you can read about here.

    Cheers

That's alway the key right? What they drove before the Tacoma. Was it a Fiat 500L or a SRT Challenger...

OP, welcome to Tacomaworld. My advice is to drive it a bit, and when you have a clear road or entrance ramp, from a stop, floor it up to the speed limit. It runs really good.

    OP,

i would say forget the ECT and all that. the ECU programming is still the same and laggy like crazy not to mention muted and underpowered... and worse, inconsistent. nothing worse than paying a high price for fancy hardware and never being allowed to use it cus the software is so awful. that is the 2GR-FKS story with the 3G Tacomas.

the only actual cause-level solution I've seen available is the OVTune if you've got the stomach for it (regarding researching, sorting through threads of info, the price, etc). the early adopters got this for driveability and getting out of the hardware what it was designed for. it's what you've already bought. a good tune allows you to use it. any q's head over to the OVTune threads (scary threads if you dare).

but hey, it's fixed most of our trucks!

Yep, the throttle by wire system on our trucks is gimped.

I had the same issue when I purchased my 2016 Tacoma, I changed out my air filter to a KNN and I noticed a decent amount of throttle response. Also the ECT works as well.

Well, I bought the truck knowing the throttle response was not to my liking. Thought I'd get used to it. Nope. That's on me.

Rather than live with it or lose thousands trading, I fixed it with OVtune.

Others report no issues and don't have complaints. That's great and I believe them.

You're not crazy and neither are they.

There are things you can do about it. That is all.

It seems that way. Pickup trucks are much more popular nowadays. People drive them for many many reasons, some of them are good reasons.......

I like my truck and the throttle response is fine. I bought this Tacoma because my plan is to keep it a long time, so I am not drag racing this bitch at every traffic light.

Gimpy, gutless, turd- all of these phrases are humorous to me- but I have been driving pickup trucks almost all my driving life- this truck is hands down the nicest, most solid ride I have ever owned.
