i was driving home, cruising at about 65. I put the truck in neutral to pull off the highway, and suddenly the truck revved all the way up the the limiter! I tapped the gas peddle and nothing. Turned the truck off and coasted into our driveway. Turned it back on and no problems. I’m thinking throttle position sensor, or the throttle body motor. Any ideas?

Is this an auto or manual. I'm curious why you shifted to neutral? Was the cruise control set when you shifted to neutral?

Sorry should’ve mentioned that. It’s a manual. I just dropped it into neutral while braking to turn onto my road. I didn’t think about cruise control though. Normally it shuts off when the break or clutch is pressed

Maybe you have a defective clutch switch.

But also the brake switch? I’ll have to test this tomorrow.

My first suspicion would be a failing TPS

Have you cleaned the throttle body lately? It may be gummed up and sticky.

If he does, wouldn’t the truck NOT restart after turning it off?
Of course, that is if the switch is bad constantly and not sporadically?

    Clutch In = Cruise Off
    Clutch In = Truck Starts

Honest question. As I pretty much think of you and Muddin’ as the Yoda gurus around here.

I think thats 2 different switches...the clutch disengage switch is high and the clutch start switch is low. I remember I had to mash my clutch to the floor to get it to start, but to disengage the cruise I just tapped on the clutch pedal.

Sounds like a stuck throttle body valve. They gum up, and it gets stuck. Usually they get stuck closed but I guess it’s possible for them to stick open.

easy way to check is go drive it, put the cruise on. hit the clutch see if it disengages, then hit the cruise again, then hit the brake and see if it dis engages...Maybe you hit the cruise resume when you put the clutch in...that will make it rev up also...

Yes, but most switches do not get stuck in a permanant condition.

The clutch switch for starting is a Normally Open Contact, The one for cruise control is a Normally Closed Contact.

Toyota put so many fail safes in the cruise control, I can't imagine there's any way that the cruise caused the runaway. NC switches, NO switches, etc. Beyond that, I've got nothing. It might be a good idea to make a call to Toyota customer care.

Id clean the throttle body and see how things go.

Scan it for codes. Any weird electrical issue related to these drive by wire systems will sound the alarm as soon as a "out of range" situation is detected. There are multiple circuits that check/cross-check the relationship between the pedal sensor at your foot and the position of the throttle plate.

If you dont have any codes id supsect a mechanical issue (not electrical) like a sticky plate. Throttle body units do go bad though. Its not common but they're around

    @Jhammerson93
OP, you have an '05. When did you acquire the truck?
If I were you I would go over to the Toyota main site and run your VIN to check and see if the series of recalls was done such as trimming the gas pedal, software revision, etc. Report back. If your truck has gone through several owners previously its entirely possible that one or more of the recalls was not done, and possibly the software reflash missed.
