I've read quite a bit about throttle issues on the 3rd gen but primarily for the V6 and the automatic. Even read there are a few TSBs for drivability on the auto. I've stalled this new-to-me truck a few more times than I would expect.

Pretty confident my stalling is due to the odd calibration of the e-throttle. Is this plausible? Are there relevant threads or experiences from other people with the manual (preferably manual 4 cylinder) to confirm? What options (if any) are there to fix this?

I drove a couple 4 and 6 cyl manuals before buying my truck and did notice that the 4-banger lacked a lot of low end torque/throttle response to get the truck rolling initially. I just chocked it up to a small engine on a large truck and gave er the beans after stalling it once. Didn't have an issue after that. May just need to learn your truck and drive it accordingly.

The 3rd gen 5MT likes a good amount of throttle, though you can start it softly too once you know it. The throttle seems programmed to resist a fast, hard start unless you really mean it.

if you start depressing the throttle faster it will eventually learn that you like that and it will improve the throttle response over time.

I test drove a 2016 2.7 MT (only 17k miles) a couple months before I bought my 2020 2.7 AT and I never had any issues with the throttle sensitivity. Never stalled it once on the 20ish minute test drive (which was also on a cold day at sea level, so maybe that helped, idk). I will say that it was a major downgrade from my 2000 Tacoma 2.7 5MT. It was not as pleasurable to drive, and it really felt like a chore, where the 2000 was a joy to drive. The shifting/clutching just wasn't as "good" and the gearing was so much taller. That's why I didn't buy it. I will say that the 3rd gen Tacoma has some funny business going on with the calibration on with their throttles, but it's not anything you can't get used to. Modern Subarus on the other hand ... ha, good luck with one of those.
