    Hey All,

So I'm still fairly new to the Taco world, as its only been about two weeks of owning one. Got an 06' Tacoma (TRD Prerunner 4.0L) with a 166k miles for a good deal as a beater truck to put miles on rather then my new vehicle. The trucks runs strong, and I don't feel the clutch slipping but the clutch has never been replaced on it and the throw out bearing chirps quite obnoxiously. I took it to my local Toyota dealer to have them take a look and give me a quote. They said the TOB is definitely the culprit and a new clutch is in order due to the amount of miles on the original clutch. They wanted $1600 total to replace both with OEM parts.

I plan on keeping this truck for a while so I don't mind paying for necessary repairs and maintenance but if I can save some $ or spend the money on different brands of parts rather then OEM to get a better value, then I'm open to that.

I already read countless threads on here about the TOB, various fixes and various aftermarket brands and kits users have tried. While all the info was great, it unfortunately only left me more confused as to what the general consensus is. Also, searching for part numbers was a nightmare on all the threads

For those of you that have made these repairs, can you guys point me (link preferred) on what to order? Is URD still the best option? And do you guys think I should have a Toyota dealer do it? Or if anyone knows of a good Toyota mechanic in Southern CA that would allow me to save some $$$, please pass on the information. Thanks.

That's an absolutely insane price for a clutch replacement. Two to three hundred bucks for clutch and TOB. Rest is labor. Half of that would be a reasonable cost.

    That's a dealer for you...outrageous.

Find a good independent repair shop. It ain't gonna be cheap, but it ain't gonna be $1600.00

Okay, I'll definitely look else where for better pricing. Is the URD kit still as a better route then the OEM Toyota tacoma parts?

Define "better". That's step one. As you go up in clutch price there are a few things you get along with it. A clutch that takes more effort to release. A clutch that is sticker so you might see a little "chatter" on taking off from a stop. These are good attributes if you are ramping up crankshaft horsepower and want to prevent slippage. But every "heavy duty" or "stage I" or "state II' clutch I have installed resulted in something that was better at the drag strip, but worse in normal traffic. If a clutch is not slipping at all, a stouter presser plate just increases the effort to press the clutch pedal.

As I said, "better" has multiple definitions. We put a heavy duty clutch in my daughter's mustang. 6 months later I was installing a stock clutch to reduce leg cramps. :)

Prerunners only come with auto transmissions, is it a 4x4?

I can't let the wife know
My clutch started slipping at 80xxx miles after I taught my wife. I paid like $300 for a pressure plate, disk and throw out bearing Aisin brand kit. Rented the transmission jack and busted out my jack stands. Took me about 8hrs ( first time). I had Pep Boys do a clutch job on my Mini Cooper once. Price was about $1500 because that clutch job was labor intense.

Prerunners come with manual transmissions. Mine is a TRD and has a stock 6spd manual transmission.

The URD release bearing and sleeve kit is the way to go IMHO, it solves a design issue with the cast aluminum quill shaft wearing from the release bearing rubbing on it.

For a stock clutch replacement, I'd go with the Aisin CKT-057, it would be the same disk and pressure plate that Toyota sells you for much more.

Never worked on a mini, but if it is a front-wheel-drive, they can be a royal PITA to replace the clutch on. No longer a simple "disconnect drive shaft, drop tranny, (sometimes having to drop exhaust first). Now you are into remove CV axles and working in a place where the engine won't support itself when you finally get the tranny disconnected. I have done exactly two of those and will NOT be doing another one (FWD manual clutch replacement). :)

URD makes some quality clutches that many people on here are running and swear by, I'm going to upgrade mine to one when the time comes.

Yeah that's what I hear, don't know why mind only lasted 17000miles mybe I got a shitty one I don't know but I got the( Urd stage 3 w/throw out bearing kit )worked great til 16500miles then started slipping. Not saying anything bad about Urd just looking for other options if I can't find another good option I'll probably try the Urd stage 2 or Competition clutch. Thanks

wow that is a really short lifespan for a clutch to be going out, I'd be very unhappy if that happened. Did you contact URD to see what they say? Sounds like a faulty product assuming it wasn't put under any undue stress

TRD also makes high performance clutches for our trucks, I haven't heard of anyone with one but I'm sure it's a quality product....I've never been disappointed with anything TRD makes. Except for their pricing, lol. TRD is always really expensive.

Yeah I did talk to Urd & was told they have a 90day warranty. But the guy was cool he said pull the clutch & if there is a manufacturer failure or defect send them a picture & they'll see what they can do for me.But in the mean time I need a new clutch so when the transmission shop takes out the clutch they can replace it at the same time.I did all my own clutch work before, but now I'm to old & lazy lol.
