The TSB bearing is no better. Had mine done by Toyota under the TSB a couple of years ago and it's chirping again in less that 25k miles. Of course they only warrantied it for 12 months, ugh.

It is working, just doing the chirp.

I just bought it with 70K on it, drove it home 250 miles, started a couple days after I bought it.

That is exactly what it is. Thought it was a belt. Only goes away when clutch is depressed. Can be idling in neutral with clutch out and still chirps.

I wouldn’t bother fixing at this time for minor annoyance. Wait till you need the clutch done

Sure appreciate all the input, I'm going to wait on it for now as it is only annoying not affecting anything else. That said, am I running the risk of something major going wrong if I drive it to the point that the TOB actually goes out? Would I notice issues in shifting before it actually shits out on me? Shifts fine now.

Nailed it. Same here bud. Be calling URD if it gets any worse. What happens next? What’s after the squeak? Am I in any danger letting it ride? Not gonna grenade my tranny or anything is it?

Dude I am in the exact same boat as you, I just bought my first tacoma, a 2009 6 speed 115k in the beginning of June. The dealership was near a highway and I didn't hear the chirp until I was home and thought "damn I have to replace everything!"

I spent a good amount of time reading a ton of threads and I haven't found anyone that had something catastrophic happen. When you eventually do your clutch it sounds like the quill (part that the TO bearing rides on) will be worn so you'll want the URD sleeve kit for a nice new surface. Other than that I plan on running my chirpy bearing all the way until new clutch time. I was relieved to see it wasn't a big deal, I didn't want to drop the trans on my new/used truck! I am slightly bummed that they have this problem, but I love manuals so even if I could go back in time I'd still buy it.

The chirp is the TO bearing intermittently hitting the pressure plate fingers. Reading the threads there are 2 schools of thought- One side says the TO bearing is never supposed to touch the PP fingers until the pedal is pushed. The other side says the TO bearing is always supposed to be in contact with the PP fingers.

I subscribe to the latter theory because one member looked through the inspection plate on a BRAND NEW tacoma and the bearing was always spinning.

For me the chirp was a loud and staccato, when I barely touched the clutch the sound was still there and steadier/constant but a lot quieter. I did the slave cylinder rebuild in this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2005-tacoma-v6-clutch-slave-cylinder-rebuild.387315/
The rebuild is cheap and not too difficult. Now the noise is steadier and constant, no change in pedal or shift feel.

@hladun seemed to figure out the slave cylinder thing first, pretty cool

    odd question...

My clutch engages/disengages fairly far out from being completely depressed.

Is this a sign of wear?

I know it’s hydraulic. So I’m thinking none of this matters.

That's what I'm thinking now. Like I mentioned, just want to know what kind of trouble I might get myself into if I let it go until it goes out. Not worried about it breaking down on me but what kind of additional damage could I do? Anyone have ideas/knowledge on that?

I've seen that question asked often, but have never seen anyone post a story of any sort of catastrophic failure.

Unless there's something unique about a tacoma, your clutch wearing to the point of slippage wont hurt anything else. It's not like a timing belt where if it snaps you risk bending the valve stems

Instead of upgrading the slave cylinder couldn't the clutch free play just be adjusted from inside the truck such that it always applies a small amount of force to engage the TOB since it is made to spin continuously? Does putting in a stronger spring (04313-34011) and longer push rod (31473-35060) in the SC do this differently than taking out the free play by adjusting the free play adjustment screw?

    Thanks in advance.
