The dealer did not offer OEM glass. I did call them before i started the replacement process because I did have a slight concern with the recalibration, they immediately said to take it Mr C's Auto Glass and said they don't do any glass replacement, no offer of OEM.

Do you know who made the glass used in your replacement?

If it's Pilkington then it's the OEM glass maker, just not branded with the Toyota logo.

This probably won’t help you now but it’s good info for anyone who maybe in the same situation in the future. I cracked my front windshield on a flying rock about 3 weeks ago and replaced it with a USA made after market (pilkington) for $300. The maker is the same maker who supplies Toyota with oem (per several installers during quote). The cheaper Chinese option was literally only $20 cheaper.

There is a simple answer to everyone’s nightmares. If you tell the idiots to NOT unplug your stuff, the windshield replacement will not cause there to be any need for recalibration. Safelit and other companies/dealers will tell you they have to unplug everything, but they do NOT. Calibration is a serious up sale and just makes more profit. If not unplugged, the camera/system will learn and correct itself. You’ll never have a issue or any code issues. My friend replaces windshields and fills cracks for a living under his own company now. He used to work for Safelit. He actually just left my house explaining all of this to me while filling a crack I got a few weeks ago. Bro hookup—— $30 cash in my garage. Next week my S10 entire windshield will be replaced for $120 cash. My friend has been doing auto glass work for over a decade now. DO NOT LET PLACES UNPLUG YOUR ELECTRONIC CRAP GOING TO THE WINDSHIELD!! You’re welcome. Hopefully nobody has to deal with our windshield bullshit ever again on the 3rd gen.

What your friend in the biz explained is exactly what my hunch was. It’s just just another profit center for the automotive glass industry. If your not educated on this trick your fuked.

Pretty much. I told him all the stories about windshield replacement on here. He promptly shut down the bs and said it’s a man made problem.

Lol. You’ll never find a Ford in my driveway unless it’s a LS swap to mess with.

The irony is RAM, GM and Toyota still haven't built anything worth a damn for a competitor in this truck class esp GM.

The Raptor is in a class of its own. The 3rd generation is around the corner so sales have slowed a tad, they are now selling for under window sticker for the first time in my area.

I can understand the desire to avoid unnecessary costs, and that not recalibrating the sensor after glass replacement may provide that. That said, if the sensor cannot be properly calibrated immediately following the glass replacement, I would be highly suspect about it working as designed.

If the glass is preventing the sensor from “seeing” correctly to complete the calibration, how do you expect it to see properly in order to detect objects?

It really depends what you’re looking for. If not unplugging it and swapping in aftermarket glass results in your truck operating in a way you’re happy with, and you saved a few bucks, you’re all set. Know that it may not be operating as it’s supposed to be though.

I’m sure he means well enough, but I’d think twice before taking the opinions of a random glass installer over the engineers who designed the safety system.

Again, up to you how you feel.

    Jeff

My wife has a mazda 3 2019 , hatch with all the bsm and the camera , it shows you the speed on the dash , etc .... Cracked windshield, safelight was going around they wouldnt get the right info. Said screw i, went with a local glass shop. They told me to buy it from the dealer ( the glass ) they installed it . Asked the dealer and they told me, theres nothing to recalibrate , you replace it and thats it . Nothing ever lit uo , works like it should ...... Also the car was so new no aftermarket was available. The glass cost 950.00 bucks, install was 200.00 .

Eh. Don’t buy into the hype. It learns after installation onto the windshield. Unplugging the system during windshield replacement is what will screw it up. My guy has replaced 100’s of our 3rd gen windshields and knows how the system operates. It’s not the guys opinion , it’s his knowledge that us mere peasant consumers do not know is all. If I video him doing a windshield swap would that convince you ? Any other way I could show you that he speaks the truth ?? He can explain in much better detail than I can. He knows his shit.

    It’s
It’s because that camera calibration corrected itself after the glass swap. Safelite blows these days. They wanted $150 bucks to fill a rock chip in my windshield. LOLOLOL It’s a 30 minute job and cost me $30 cash. They’re out of their damn mind these days. I know 2 people here in Nashville that work at the Safelite downtown. They both know their prices have gotten crazy.

Same here, Toyota wanted 600 for OE "Toyota" glass and outsourced their work. instead a Local company came out to my place and offered an aftermarket for 300, turned out to be the real thing, Pilkington. Never recalibrated or anything and no codes, used to be at 1.5 lift, now at 1.25, no issues. I still don't care much for TSS though and eventually might have it shut off.

This so much. Just because no warning lights are flashing doesn't mean everything is working properly. While the TSS is very advanced and has probably prevented many accidents, it's just a system of sensors and cameras. Not some super computer with artificial intelligence. I would be interested to see if these independent glass installers would be willing to actually test the pre-collision system after they complete the job.

Haven’t had to replace my windshield yet, it’ll happen eventually I’m sure. The collision avoidance does work well though. I tried it in traffic hovering my foot over the brake. I stepped onto the brake when the truck started braking without my input. Only thing I didn’t like is that it applied WAAY more braking than I actually needed. It smashed down hard af. Lolol
