Throwing Codes!

Well I thought I was smarter than my Taco so I installed a front camera last night. It worked great but as I was driving to work this morning I noticed that my clock wasn't displayed and I now have the Check Engine and Trac Off lights lit up. Anybody have a suggestion for a good OBDII scanner? Gad I hate electrical troubleshooting!

Update: In a moment of clarity I remembered that I left a diode out of the circuit to pin 2 on the 28 pin connector. Took 10 minutes at lunch to solder it in, all good now. Guess I shouldn't do mods after midnight!

 

How did you hook up your front camera?

 

Warranty.

Unless you've been hacking wiring of the affected items.

 

Codes thrown by modifying the vehicle isn't covered by Warranty.

 

You likely blew a fuse, check all fuses under hood and under the drivers dash. It might clear the code with needing a reader.

 

I’ll do some troubleshooting this evening and post what I figure out.

I don't think an obd2 scanner will help in this case since it is most likely due to a wiring issue when you set up your camera. Sure you might find something it is affecting but it isn't the real root cause.

That being said if you still want to scan it, the big chain auto parts stores will do it for free, no need to buy a scanner just for this.

I personally have a scanner because I get a check engine light all the time on a different vehicle I have, and I need to confirm it is still just an Evap leak. If it was just a one time use like this, id just swing by AutoZone/oreilly's.

 

I picked up a bluetooth scanner off Amazon and use my android phone to read the codes on torque app. Works pretty well.

I used a slightly modified version of Hoange's schematic because I used a wireless transmitter and receiver.

 

I’m thinking that I’d like to have a scanner for future use. Any suggestions on brands and features are appreciated.

Sorry, I didn’t really think to document the process. Here’s a bit more info, I removed the iQ charger switch and replaced it with the camera switch. I took power off the 12 volt outlet to power the camera switching relay. I used an Audiovox ACA200W camera wired up to the wireless transmitter under the hood and tucked the wireless receiver and switching relay behind the dashboard.
