I have the ol 6spd chirping tob, its driving me mad! The clutch flywheel and bearing was just put in last july and only has around 10k on it and the chirp is back and badder than ever. Going with a suggestion from another forum I took my dustcover off and carefully used a super high temp grease on the input shaft snout behind the TOB, well that didn't work, after taking it off again and looking, with the clutch pedal not being pushed, the TOB is pressed against the fingers of the pressure plate. I'm wondering if that's my culprit, if I'm not mistaken, at pedal out, the bearing should not be engaging anything, is there adjustment in the slave cylinder? Is the slave cylinder shot?

Could be the slave cylinder or a bent TOB fork. Does the TOB touch fingers with slave removed?

I'll have to get under and pull it on Sunday next day I'm off, but I was figuring the return spring could be causing it to not pull the piston back in

The TOB is going to contact the fingers at all times as it should. If you haven't put in the updated slave cylinder you could try it. The updated one has a longer plunger and stiffer spring which both help to keep more pressure against the fingers on the pressure plate.

I already ordered the rebuild kit after reading through another thread, I've not torn into too many manual vehicles but most I've seen the TOB doesn't actually touch anything with the pedal up. Kinda wierd but I'm hoping rebuilding the cylinder will at least hush the squeak a little

Yeah it does. Mine has the noise and has had it for the last 120K miles generally only when the weather is cold. Because it has no adjustment the slave cylinder must remain full of fluid or it would not disengage the clutch because there would be too much free play.

Could you post a link where you got the rebuild kit? I believe it is time to rebuild mine.

I would recommend 04313-34011 and 31473-35060 (or alternatively 31470-35181 for the complete assembly) when doing this. The spring is stiffer and the pushrod slightly longer to ensure that there is enough force keeping the release bearing pressed against the pressure plate.
