I took the truck in to Toyota today with 48k on the clock. I have this whining noise on cold starts and after I had my 50k service 2 days ago, the noise stopped. Then this morning, it made the same noise while leaving the gas station except it was loud. Went for a ride with the tech and he said it’s the throwout bearing.

I’m second guessing the throwout bearing diagnosis. It’s doing the exact opposite of every throwout bearing problem I know of, have experienced, or researched. As the RPMs come up when accelerating I get a whine and when I depress the clutch, the noise goes away. When the engine is under load and coasting and RPMs are coming down, I get the noise until I push the clutch. This shit has me baffled. Any thoughts? It his highly likely that I am just retarded and am dead wrong.

I tried taking video but the noise doesn’t come through on camera.

Throwout bearing gets blamed a lot but it could be the pilot bearing instead. Generally one will act up when the clutch pedal is pressed and the other when it's let go. But to replace either it's the same procedure, you have to pull the clutch.

My fj needed a TOB pretty early on in it's life.

Noise goes away when you push in the clutch? TOB.

Might as well upgrade all those components with a clutch kit, if anyone makes them..

Im not familiar with the 3rd gens and the problems/potential problems of that MT, but if its a throw out or pilot bearing, most of the cost will be labor. Might be a good time to uprade your clutch while you're at it. Do your research though and do it thoroughly. URD makes some great stuff.

Why is there a labor cost? At 48k, @Trident904 should still have the power train warranty.

Pilot bearing sounds like it is trashed.

It is a common failure point on manual transmissions as it is always spinning. It sees pretty severe duty as far as bearings go.

To be honest I'm surprised more of them don't go bad as often.

TOB isn’t covered by the warranty.

Problem is, there are no aftermarket clutch parts for the 3rd gen. Only OEM.

Throwout and pilot bearings are part of the clutch assembly which is considered a wear item and not covered under warranty unless it can somehow be proven that it was defective from the start. Likely won't happen

Pilot bearing is not listed in the “not included” section of the warranty.

3rd Gen RC-62F 6M/T does not have the extension on the input shaft nor a pilot bearing in the end of the crank. I didn't believe it either until I saw it in the service manual. You can cross that off your list.

That was what I thought too, no pilot bearing on our trucks.

M/T 2.7 3rd gen trucks had pilot bearings though.. different transmission, obviously. No idea why they decided to axe it on the 6 speed for the V6.

Right that is true, I should have phrased my statement better in case the thread is searched in the future.

After some more research, I think I might as well replace the clutch and flywheel while I’m in there. The URD stuff if really affordable and the OEM tob is only $96 through the dealer parts desk.

Im running the URD stage 2 clutch with heavy fly wheel in my second gen, and am super happy with it. I emailed them, and told them how I use my truck and asked for their recommendation of which stage would be best for me. They responded quickly, and suggested the stage 2, which was good because I was going to order the stage 3. Just food for thought.

wishing you luck in figuring this out.

definitely, especially in your case with a built truck that sees stress. i am waiting for any kind of symptom... as soon as it shows I'm upgrading as much clutch hardware as i can access. but unfortunately i think you're right that only the clutch itself is available from URD unless something changed recently.
