And I'd swear they did NOT check it physically, because it means letting it cool down and about 1 hr or so of THEIR time...!!

My vote would also be that it’s the transmission.

It only clunks when cold and happens on the first or second stop 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles from home, and only
    once every several days.

When new, it surged a few times in the driveway when steering up slope into the garage.
It was also clunking into Drive and Reverse. 1 quart of transmission fluid solved that.

It was functioning well at 1,000 miles and I thought all was good and then it surged just once several days ago in a parking lot at 1,300 miles.

    Perhaps it’s still learning.

Dash cams are worth their weight I gold man.,.!
I've had the dealer lie to me and then "clam up" when I showed him the video..!!

Shake your head all you want in disagreement -- Toyota has a open case on my complaint and the Toyota service Area Rep took the time to check my issues out. besides-- what do you care -- you don't even own a Gen3!!

Got it for a christmas gift from my wife. I love it! I know its not the advisors issue with what the tech does. I get it don't piss off co workers and so on. The kicker is on the video he was complaining he would have to let it cool down to check manually. However, i brought it in 3 hours early and only drove 2 miles to get to the dealership in order to have it cooled down to check it. I guess leaving it running for 40 minutes before he got around to complain he'd have to wait for it to cool down really struck a nerve.

My guess is axel wrap. If you pulse the brakes, (coming to an almost complete stop, then letting off, almost complete stop, let off etc) just right so that the suspension compresses you can get it to do it pretty reliably. That's w mine anyway.

What you describe, sounds like a fault in the power steering oil pressure switch.
There is no on-board monitoring for this.
You can monitor in real-time with Techstream.
Did the tech monitor it's operation during test drive?

Even then, Techstream will only tell you ON or OFF. The ECU might be receiving wonky voltage.
ON(steering wheel turned) is supposed to below 1.5V.
OFF(no steering input) is supposed to be 11-14V.

Then again, it could be as you imply, in the ECU; in it's load compensation strategy.

Thanks for your "technical answer" The Toyota Rep did not hook up any devices -- we just spent time maneuvering in and around the lot --monitoring the surges. "power steering oil pressure switch" -- gotta remember that!
    Thanks

Here's a link explaining what it does. Keep in mind, it is not monitored.

This usually carries a SAE DTC of P0550. You can see here it's not monitored.

So in conclusion to your idea -- could this switch cause this problem?

Yes, it i's certainly a possibility.
There are a list of reasons why it could be faulting out though. Could be: a bad ground, diaphragm is tweaked, sensor contaminated, electrical connector(s), fluid contaminated, out-of-spec bore, etc.

The more data points you can give, the easier it would be to isolate.
    Is it intermittent?
    Is it constant?
    Occurs only when it's cold?
    Worse when cold?
Goes away after a warm-up period?
    Etc..?

Could also be the programming the ECU.

took a long drive today took notice of the thumping/vibrations while coming to stops.
So the far the consistencies I see on mine is that I have to be coming to a stop from driving above 35mph, anything under that I don’t get the vibes.

I don’t get the surging but it sounds like what the my old 2015 Eco F150 did while in Tow/Haul mode the transmission sort of surged and shot the RPM’s up while coming to stop but that was an actual feature that made the transmission down shift acting like an engine brake to help stop the truck under load.

Obviously our Tacos don’t have that sort of tow/haul feature, fingers crossed I don’t get the surging bug as well. Taking it for the 5k service this weekend will ask to check into the thump/vibes

Sorry to rise a dead thread, but anyone with this issue came across a solution from the dealer or Toyota?

Not that I'm aware of. Mine only occurred during cold temps and when the engine was cold (water temp guage in the 1/4 area) My truck has been at the dealer for a majority of the past 2.5 months...if/when I get it back I'll see if the issue still exists.

I get this thud noise.........sounds like the tranny had fallen off, I do not think its an axle wrap but the transmission
Its well known the shifting of 3rd gens is wonky, hoping there is a fix for this cuz it drive me bananas, stopping abruptly then the bang thud

For what it's worth... I get the 2-1 "thud" in my 2018 OR. Add another model year with the problem.
