So I found a video of a 3rd gen Tacoma making a pretty loud tick/slap/knock at idle. To me it sounds distinctly different than the noise people post of the self-cleaning injector cycle or the high-pressure fuel pump. It almost sounds like piston slap or knocking.

My new 2023 TRD OR makes this exact noise, which is mostly audible from the driver side wheel well like the attached video. It only makes the noise when it’s idling around 500-600 rpm. It doesn’t make it during the high-idle when warming up or when driving/accelerating. It also does it cold or warm.

In the attached Reddit forum almost everyone is saying it’s normal and that theirs also does it, but there were two people saying it’s bad lifters or a spun bearing.

So how normal is this? Is this the Tacoma tick? If it was really the injectors, wouldn’t the noise be a lot faster, not just once per second or so?

It’s sweet music. And because it’s Toyota, of course it also serves a constructive purpose.

Just enjoy the precisely engineered sounds of internal combustion coming from six under-worked cylinders completely unfettered by forced induction. 20+ years in the making.

This sounds like a noise I’ve noticed within the last 6k miles, but didn’t hear in the previous 65k. However, I still think it’s fine. It’s a very loud engine overall, and feels perfect still.

Dude these trucks make every noise imaginable under the sun. The engines make all kind of different kinds of ticks. Mine sounds different all the time along with my last 4 3rd gens I’ve owned. You’ll get used to it or maybe you won’t. 7 years in and I’m still adjusting to the quirks of tacoma trucks

I started to get a noise like that today after switching fuels. Normally get Chevron e89, got shell e91 on a near empty tank. Not too long after I started to hear a slapping noise at idle and after a bit longer it began to sound like I had angry crickets in the engine bay.

Seems to quieted down after mixing some Lucas fuel treatment into the tank.
