Hey guys, as of the last few weeks, when I start my truck, it makes a ticking noise for a few seconds then goes away. Almost as if there's something on the fan or something.

I also noticed that it's taking a bit too long to start as well. Cranks fine, but takes a bit to start. Probably unrelated.

I'll have to get a video of the sound for you guys, and I guess start checking stuff like fuel pressure and the like for the latter problem.

I know this is VERY vague, but this is a starting point.

Here's a video. I think it's either related to cold starts, or the cooling fan being on high. I started it up again right after and the fan started on low and didn't make the noise. No play in any of the pulleys or fan as far as I could tell.

Mine takes that long to start too when it's cold. As for the noise, it almost sounds like the starter cycling, something vibrating or rattling as the engine kicks and starts, or cylinders are misfiring but that should throw a code? :s

No code as of yet. The noise actually persists a few more seconds than you can hear in the video.

Sounds more like a Toyota that's a little low on oil or just in need of a change. That was like the alarm clock for my corolla; tick on the start, add oil.

Interesting. I'll check it tomorrow. I just checked the other day and it seemed good. Then again, my dipstick is hard to read.

When my engine was misfiring bad because of spark plugs I never got a code. Had a bad stutter under certain conditions though.

mine starts like that once it gets cold but if any things it probably the starter. The ticking idk check oil idk?

I'm thinking like everybody else, your either not getting enough oil to the top end at startup, or something is rattling or vibrating. I doubt it's fan related, fans will make noise at startup because that is part of the open loop mode. Fan clutch should kick off after a couple minutes

What I heard only lasts for less than a second.

This is a wag (wild ass guess), but it could be a problem with the starter solenoid not retracting the starter pinion from the flywheel as soon as it should. Never heard of this happening before, but that's what popped into my head.

I think it's a bit of oil starve at startup.

Really bad cheap fuel could make it sound like a diesel at first as well. Then the knock sensors cancel it out.

I was like a TINY bit low on oil. Maybe added a quart of a quart. Started her up and lo and behold, no noise. It's also like 50 degrees today, so it'll take some repeated trials to be sure, though!

Have a 2004 Geo Tracker 4x4 and it likes to startup rattle when it drops 1/2 quart or less. Once it's topped off..no rattle.

This could be corrected by an oil filter that has an anti-drainback valve. Not all of them do. Try an OEM filter next time you change oil.

    I only use OEM.

I added oil yesterday morning. I have to go to work today, so I'll see if it makes the noise or not again.

Welp. I have the exact noise from the video posted above. It will only do it in cold weather and lasts 3-4 seconds on a cold start only. I check my oil literally every fuel fill up. Going to investigate the torque converter and starter like some other threads suggested. But I assume those would make the noise every startup if they were the cause...

Hello its the typical noisy valve train that these engines make. Mine did it around 80k and I have 150k on it now. Yes always in cold weather startup. Solution that helps, use synthetic oil and add Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer it helps with the noise. For harder startups try a fuel injection cleaner like BG 44k. Its pricey but well worth it. Also BG CF5 which is cheaper will get water out of your fuel system if there is any.
