It is not unusual for these 4 cylinders to develop a small tick. The valves do not have a normal adjustment, thus when things wear overtime, you can get a tick. Sometimes the chains can make a tick noise (the 4 cyl has a timing chain and a balance chain) If the noise is of a huge concern, and it IS valve tick, then the way to fix this is to replace the shims with the correct size. This takes some time, and can get a little costly, as the shims are around $12 each, and there are 16 shims total. Of course not all shims will need to be replaced. Just giving you some additional info.

Thanks for all the help guys. I guess it's a good thing that I don't have to spend money on it, but I was hoping that it was an easy fix like the belts were old and then I could rest easy when they were replaced. Now I'm just wondering what will fail first :/ lol

This tick problem sounds similar to mine, my mechanic is backed up for months, did listen to my vehicle, said the tick may possibly be coming from the timing chain cover area.

My question, would a bad timing chain or guide cause the vehicle to lose power/chug/sputter. My tacoma (2.7 3RZFE automatic) does this and I am trying to narrow the problem.

    Help!!!!
