Ticking noise - torque converter, lifters, something else?

From your ears, is it related to this sound? Asking because I know video recordings tend to give different audio of subtle sounds to what you actually hear with your ears

So funny. Pouring over this on & off for days & now I am sayin', "I think so?" However mine has a lot of other sounds going on, especially with the idle at 1100. I could compare videos, but I gota get some shut eye. & probably the best thing is for me to pull the ps pump belt, make a vid & compare. & another with the air assist hose pulled.

Here are a couple without the accessory belts. I was getting a little nervous about the engine heating up (I did some stethoscoping too), so that 2nd one's a little short, but I was trying to get in some from the left side.
Just thinkin', I don't think the engine was loping like it was with the belts. I'll double check in a bit if it's important.

Sounds like lifter noise to me. A good way to quiet them down (worked for me) would be to do the seafoam treatment through the air intake

Hard to tell still if there wasn't some of that in my vid. Even with the belts off, it was still pretty noisy given the high idle. I thought having the ps pump belt off would bring down the whine....

So what is the diagnoses for yours?

If it's a whine, then it might be one of your pulley's bearings going bad. Especially if the whine increases with acceleration. I had that happen to mines too, and it ended up being the a/c pulley.

Hard for me to tell from the audio in your video though, so take this with a grain of salt

Edit: and the ticking noise in my video was the lifters. It's better now

These engines do not have lifters, not hydraulic ones anyway. Our valvetrain clearances tend to tighten.

Get the idle right, it seems to be vacuum or throttle related (electric signal) and listen again.

I don't think the tick is a problem. Really doesn't sound like much with belts off.

The 1st couple of vids (page 1) are with the belts. These two are without. @TnShooter suggested I do this. Some of the whine was the ps pump (maybe the pulley), so the whining in these two vids is all engine.

Hmmm, about the only thing that could whine with all belts off is transmission.

Your timing set isn't original is it?

    No. They've been done twice.

I looked these up when @crazytacoman posted it
    These are not hydraulic?

a bit of a misnomer as it is a bucket that holds a shim for precise adjustment of valve lift.
Ours tend to tighten with age and get quieter. Ours are noisy at idle but it's a good thing.

If your truck has changed recently and drastically, this isn't it.

    Those are the buckets.
Technically your Taco doesn't have lifters it's direct drive overhead cam with buckets and shims for valve clearance.
No push rods or rocker arms either.

    No, they are called “buckets”.
    Look up “shim over bucket”

Sorry @kristiwithak I thought the 5VZ engine was similar in having lifters like the 3RZ. Not too sure about your noise then.

If you would like to rule out an air leak, you could try spraying some soap and water, and seeing where bubbles form

3RZ are direct drive single overhead cam driven bucket and shim adjusted valves. No lifters, push rods or valve rockers.

Not necessarily funny, remember that the engine compartment can act as somewhat of an echo chamber

So as I was fighting with the freakin' brake fitting again, I caught sight if this. Is this a leak? & if so, could it explain some? many? of the symptoms?

I used to have an 04 3.4, was totalled by a tree. The ticking noise drove me bonkers because the 3.4 in my dad's T100 didn't tap or tick whatsoever even with 370k miles. Ironically, the truck was totalled by a falling tree awaiting valve clearance check by my mechanic because I was so paranoid about the ticking. He told me the ticking was a mix between the injectors and the valves and it was completely normal. Truck drove completely fine.

    I miss it.

Once it's cold, start up the engine and put your hand over it and see if you feel any pressure or put a piece of paper in there and see if it blows out. You could also inspect your flex plate to see if it's damaged by removing the inspection plate at the bottom of the bell housing and have someone rotate the engine by hand with a long breaker / ratchet on the crank bolt (19mm) to see the whole thing.
