    Hi there,

    2009 tacoma TRD.

I wonder if anyone can advise about or relate to a "ticking noise"
that has developed over this year.

It is coming from under the hood.
    drivers side.

I can only hear it when I am moving. And not when I am simply idling.

I am aware of toyotas vvti.

This noise is related to acceleration...

Most noticable at lower speeds...gaining speed.

Once I'm doing say 60km/h and take my foot off the gas...the noise stops...but as soon as I feather the gas pedal...it comes back.

The loudness of the noise doesn't change. Although it is less audible when moving faster as it is slightly drowned out by road noise etc.

Any opinions or experiences greatly appreciated!

    Thanks just now.

    All stock, baby!
Does the frequency of the ticking noise change at all? If it does, does it seem to be related to engine speed, or vehicle speed?

Not really...its a pretty steady rhythmic tick...

Definitely related to engine speed...opposed to wheels, bearing, prop shaft etc.

I did have a mechanics shop look at it. They are fairly reliable.
Reliable enough to find holes in my
frame which I hoped wouldnt appear!

They mechanics said they thought it was something internal engine.
    Possible a pulley?
And basically said it wasnt work the labour, time and cost to me.

They didn't think it was anything catastrophic - touch wood.
This was earlier in the year.

    Im also at 239,000km.

I was just hoping someone on here would have lived it and solved it! Haha

I'm having the same problems. My tapping noise I found with a wooden rod, is coming from the valve cover about 3/4 of the way back on the driver side. When I rev the engine in neutral, it goes up and down with the rpms and the sound turns to, more of a whining/ whistling sound. I noticed today if I got on the throttle really hard, it would not change gears until I let off the throttle. I've changed the timing cover, top timing chain guide, water pump, cluch fan, VVti solenoid, spark plugs, and one of the coils.

...see if you have an exhaust manifold leak. ....blow in to the tailpipe with a clean shop vac and cool engine, and spray soap and water mix on to the manifold perimeter, where pipes meet mounting plate, etc, and look for bubbles from the vac air....
