Hi everyone! I am new to the forum and I have a question. Recently I bought a tacoma and there is a ticking noise coming from the passenger side. I know it's not rodknock but I am just concerned on it if its bad gas (87 is what I use) or the oil (old owner did a change a week before selling it to me on the 3rd of January he used the shop recommended oil so I don't know what it is but I do have 10w-30 on standby). If anyone could tell me what it is and what to do that would be amazing.

I kinda figured. But you hear that ticking in the beginning? Theres like two ticking noises going on, thats what just concerning me but I figured these might be noisy engines.

Yea mine sounds like that too on a cold start, sounded the same since it was new.
Every 4.0 I've heard sounds the same so I don't worry about it.
I think alot of it is due to it having solid buckets instead of hydraulic lifters so there is always some amount of valve lash.

Sounds normal to me. We bought our 2005 when it was new, and it's pretty much always been noisy like that. I switched to a synthetic blend when dino became hard to find, and the engine sounded different at first. That, or I just got used to the sound. Not sure but I *think* different brands or types can cause the engine to sound a little different.

The 4.0 engine tick has been talked about since the engine rolled off the assembly line. There are numerous threads about it and it is determined to be normal.

Curiously mine was relatively quiet when new. But alas, as the miles chalk up so has the ticking...
