Tie Rod End help

    I'm a newish Taco owner that has 275k miles on it from KS. I bought it from my FIL, so I know the maintenance history, basically none. I replaced both lower ball joints today and attempted to change the outer tie rod ends, because the boot was torn on the passenger side, while both sides were loose. The passenger side gave us a fight, but it was done, the drivers side kicked our a**es. We got the jam nut loosened, but the outer tie rod would not loosen from the inner at all. Not even with a pipe wrench and cheater bar or heating it with a torch, we ended up cranking on it hard enough that the inner tie rod bent a bit. Now I know that I'm going to have to attempt to pull the inner tie rod off the rack with the outer tie rod attached. Has anyone ran into this before? The Low Range video mentions it briefly, but both they and Timmy show the outer tie rod being able to be loosened by hand. There's not a crazy amount of rust, but it seems seized to hell. I've been using PB Blaster for the past 2 days. I'd hate to go cranking on it enough to damage my steering rack.

    Just had this happen to me, although mine didn't seem as tight as yours, it was still sized tight. Sprayed the joint down with pb blaster, then took a pair of vice grips attached to the ote (below, yellow) and then put a 27mm wrench on the flats on the inner tie rod end that threads into the ote (below, red). Threw a cheater on the vice grips and had my gf hold the wrench and it cracked free with little to no effort.

    If that still gives no results, I would look into pulling everything. Hopefully it doesn't come to that!

    Not being apart since new .

    You are going the correct direction?? I still mess up at times then right and left has been a challenge my whole life.

    Yeah, I was going lefty loosy, I caught myself going backwards on the drivers side after a second or two. The jam nut loosened, just not the actual tie rod. AFAIK, the truck has always been a Kansas truck, I’m the 3rd owner. I’ve ordered a 27mm and 32mm wrench, haven’t found anyplace locally that stocks them, to hopefully pull the inner tie rod off with the outer TRE attached. Has anyone used the inner TRE kits? Thought if drastic measures are needed maybe to cut the outer TRE off and attempt to use one of the inner TRE kits to pull it off as well.

    This product made changing the inner tie rods a breeze on a 17 year old truck from the rust belt. It fits the steering rack portion perfectly with its low profile jaw and I was able to break loose the inner tie rod using a pipe wrench while this held the steering rack in place. For pipe wrench, I went to harbor freight and got their largest one.

    I rented the inner tie rod tool from advance auto and it would not fit over my truck’s Inner Tie Rod.

    Awesome, thanks for the heads up on the inner TRE tool. I’ll pick the locking wrench up, I’ve never seen one like that before. I don’t think I’ve ever passed up the chance to get a new tool. I’m gonna hit it with more PB blaster again today and each day until the new inner TRE’s show up.

    Never fails seems like it is always something.

    Could be the high mileage compared to the ones I pulled apart in the Liquid Brine belt were all in the 125 to 175 thousand mile range

    I can`t recall any fighting me this bad.

    I used a pipe wrench to hold the inner tie bar along with a 2-foot, 2-inch diameter pipe as an extender. Took all my strength to loosen the nut on the outer tie bar, but it did work. If you've already loosened the nut, you'll probably need another pipe wrench to crank the OTB loose.

    I struggled a bit trying to remove my OTREs last month. Picked up a big 27mm wrench and spud wrench and had them off in a minute or two. Both wrenches were purchased at my local Home Depot.
