Thanks ya I think the confusion is stemming from the original worded description that sounded like the OTRE to me

My bad! I meant there is no cotter pin in the jam-nut pictured. Of course there's one where the outer tie rod end connects to the knuckle.

A lot and I mean a lot of bad information here until G8R correctly identified the part as a jam nut. There is really nothing dangerous about it being loose. I mean it could potentially back out, but if you have ever had to turn and adjuster with a pipe wrench or had to get out your torch to loosen a tie rod end, you realize that the nut doesn't do much. If by chance the rod backed itself all the way out, you would be in some serious peril which is what it is there for.

I wouldn't worry about it beyond just snugging them up on each side. You could take it back and make them check the alignment to give you peace of mind, but chances are very, very slim there has been any change.

Years later, but just wanted to add to this. I am having a rotational vibe right side. Passenger can feel it through the footboard.
Anyway, jacked it up & had play at 9 & 3. I grabbed the tie rod & by chance noticed the nut was loose. I tightened the nut & the play is gone. Had an alignment a couple/few weeks ago.
Alls I’m sayin’ is while it may not be considered dangerous, my guess is it could take a toll on other parts. Good to keep an eye out for this.
Now my axle is making a clicking noise when I quickly turn the wheel back & forth. Any relation? I dunno.
Sucks when ya keep doing things over & don’t know if it was me or a loose nut or ????
