Tight E-brake stock

Anyone notice the e-brake is extremely tight? while moving slowly, if I try pulling it at all (not even 1 click), it violently locks the back wheels. I thought drum brakes were bad? I didn't think they were that strong. Most of my cars would never lock up unless you pulled the e-brake as hard as you could...for fishtails of course.

 

I never tried pulling mine while moving... but about a month after buying a 2019 OR I kept noticing that the brakes were extremely touchy and would grab the second I pressed them so I took it back to Toyota and turns out the E-Brake was actually over tightened and was interfering with the brake input. They "fixed" it. Its a little better but still not to my liking.

 

did you try turning the wheel when you pulled up the e-brake? Because Tacoma’s are drift machines.

 

Perhaps it's just too tight. I just like to test it once in a while down a hill (with thumb holding button in of course) to check the condition and tightness of the rear brake...and if it can really slow the truck. I did this, and about 1 inch pulled, without any lever resistance whatsoever, the back brakes locked up and tires roared like an 18 wheeler locking up on a freeway. Scary, and really embarrassing.

 

When I was 18, we used to "grab" a few trays from Wendy's. When properly placed below rear wheels, and e-brake pulled tight...you can drift your fwd car and make it whip around silly-fast. The plastic food trays slide VERY well on pavement.

 

Parking brake is supposed to have 5-7 clicks when pulled with 45 ft/lbs of force.
Mine was good.

The rear drum adjuster is supposed to backed off 15 notches from locked.
Mine was 5 from locked.

I'm having the same problem. 45lbs for 5-7 clicks sounds about right (without actually measuring the force), but the first click with light force completely locks up the rear wheels. Even in 4 Low I can't overpower it with a moderate amount of throttle. I haven't experienced such a strong parking brake on any other car (but I haven't owned any others with drum brakes). I'll check the adjuster when I have time, but if this sounds normal that would save me from having to work on it.

 

My last set of rear drums were on my old Fiat many moons ago.

It had a handbrake that worked very well...

My current handbrake in the Taco is a bit tight - and I like it! Ebrake and brakes in general seem to be well set up.

- I do really appreciate the fact that we have an real, actual HAND brake.

I was also quite surprised at the rear brakes' grabbing power via the ebrake..

I don't have any issues to report with operation, performance, or feel.

Handbrake has not been a source of any issues.

 

Anyone else's P-brake not release sometimes when on an incline? (pointed downhill)

Mine occasionally does this... I have to back up slightly (even just an inch will do it), then it lets go. Weird.
